  • Here are our top picks for a few different side hustles you need to try out this year!
  • How can you turn your hobbies/interests into a seriously good side hustle?

Side hustles are one of those things that we would all benefit from putting a bit more time into. For real, there is nothing better than raking in a bit of extra cash on the side. There are so many little things out there that can really help you get a foot in the door. Finding a side hustle that is right for you can genuinely really take you places. If you’re good at something and you enjoy it, why not try to do it more? I mean, try to sell it, why not? Turning something you're passionate about into a way of making money is never going to be a bad idea.

Here are a few ways you can start making a bit of ca$h on the side!

Depop:

Depop is probably the most popular second-hand selling website in the game. There are loads of people on there selling second-hand/brand new clothes, shoes, and accessories. It has a heap of vintage and handmade clothes from sellers making it a super open place to explore and change up your sense of style. Setting up your own account is super simple. All you have to do is sign up then start listing items for sale, supplying the viewers with all the details about the item and giving a price. Potential buyers can either save, like or put your item in their bag - or now you can even make offers (I have used this addition quite often). If they want what you have they will checkout and the money will come through straight into your Paypal and voilà. Second-hand selling made simple.

It is the perfect place to build your capsule wardrobe while being sustainable. A little rule I try to make for myself is to only spend what I have earnt on the app. I like to buy a lot of my clothes on Depop and a perfect way to be sustainable is by only buying from the app with the money that you have earnt from selling your items on the app.

If you are into sewing or making your own little creations - Depop is defs the place to trial selling some of your pieces. So many of Australia’s slow fashion labels which are popping off atm all started on Depop.

Markets/garage sales:

Markets and garage sales can be a super fun and practical way of getting rid of second-hand stuff fast, or taking a product you have created and having a go at selling it. However, this one might be a bit niche depending on where you are located. Whether it’s a hit or a miss, an annual garage sale is always a good idea. It gives you a reason to have to do a big clean out, finally. You might sell heaps and it’ll be a hit or you might only have a few customers. Nonetheless, once you have the stuff out of your house and you’ve gone through everything you will not want to bring it back in. So, you can often donate it to op shops or charities nearby. Meaning only good can come from it really.

Facebook Marketplace:

Facebook Marketplace is seriously underrated. I mean I think it is (I feel like I don’t hear people talking about it enough). Seriously, I am surprised at the possibilities on there. It is pretty much the place to sell anything that you don’t want anymore. Whether this be clothes, furniture, accessories, or literally anything. I mean, me and my housemates even got some bites for a box of stones, $50 in the bag. I’m telling you guys, don’t underrate the power of second-hand selling as a side hustle.

Investing In Your Hobbies:

Investing in your hobbies pretty much means starting to take your passions/interests a little more seriously. This may be more of a long term goal but there is no harm in committing to your hobbies as a side hustle. For a lot of us, we have 9-5 jobs which take up a lot of capacity in our schedules - but if you love doing something and you want to start taking it more seriously, please start taking the time to make it happen! Having something on the side which you love doing and also brings you in a bit of cash can be so helpful and it even starts to allow you to love your actual job more, since you have something else on your plate, to also pour energy into. Making that move and investing in your hobbies even if it’s just little steps at a time can lead to many doors opening and sooner or later it could become way more than just a side hustle.

If I haven’t convinced you already - please trust me when I say, this year is the year of side hustles. Being motivated to make that start can be hard but just take it step by step and before you know it, it’ll be a part of your routine. Whatever you’re interested in, there is sure to be a side hustle out there for you.
