3 Women Who Are Killing it in Construction
Overview
- For too long, men have dominated the construction industry.
- Here are three women in construction who are using TikTok to encourage other young women to follow suit.
For far too long, worksites have consisted of a bunch of blokes on the tools while Triple M rocks their workday, lacking the strong feminine energy every workplace needs. But those days are no more (or at least are on the way out) because there’s a new wave of young women stepping into construction careers and showcasing their journey on TikTok.
Here are three of those women who have taken construction by storm, what inspired them and how they got to where they are today.
Billie Banks @billiebanksss
Billie is an 18-year-old girl who started out as a carpentry apprentice at the age of 16. Posting regularly on both tiktok and insta she is both super influential and just straight up cool.
The aim of her account is to inspire other young women to consider careers in construction, in the same way she was inspired by fellow influencer, Lauren Larsen. Carpentry was something Billie had always been interested in but didn’t know if she would pursue it because there aren’t many women in the trade.
Plus, she’s doing everything she can to make sure future apprentices know what they’re in for before their first day. If you head over to her page, you’ll find a bunch of content from stories about her pathway to becoming a carpenter and day-in-the-life videos to give everyone a peek behind the curtain into what they can expect from a career in construction.
When she first decided to take the leap into carpentry, Billie found an apprenticeship by posting on a Facebook job-finding group. A company reached out to her and thought she’d give it a go, and never looked back.

Soph @thefemalecarpenterm8
Soph, known by her TikTok handle @thefemalecarpenterm8 is, as you can probably guess, an Aussie carpentry apprentice who has been sharing her journey as a woman in the trade via TikTok.
Soph’s account is super informative, with plenty of tutorial-style videos for specific tasks involved in carpentry with step-by-step explainers of what she’s doing and why.
At the same time, her videos are light-hearted and fun, giving an insight into worksite banter and a bit of mucking about at TAFE.
So, if you want some insights into the nitty-gritty of carpentry, and maybe even learn a thing or two for your next DIY project, go check out Soph’s account.

Lauren Larsen @Laurenlarsen
For years Lauren Larsen knew that a career sitting behind a computer screen just wasn’t for her, so instead she thought she’d try her hand at carpentry. She created her TikTok account to inspire other women to take the plunge into trades even if they’re a teeny bit hesitant.
On the daily, she makes content that gives an insight into the life of an apprentice carpenter, and the jobs she does on the regular, like timber framing, windows, renovations, decks and doors.
Before starting her apprenticeship, Lauren didn’t have any previous carpentry experience, she just helped her dad out with some odd jobs around the house. But after starting a business uni degree and realising it wasn’t for her, she decided to ask her male friends if they had any positions going at work. From there she did a week trial in carpentry and never looked back.
Lauren’s content is great because it gives an honest insight into her career. She’s admitted that the work is physically quite hard, but going to the gym regularly has made a world of difference. But she doesn’t want that to discourage anyone from at least giving construction a go, giving pearls of wisdom like, “if you’re looking at starting, start having conversations, just give it a go and see if you like it. You can never lose if you just give something a go.”
