When you’re catching up with your friend group and talking about work, who are the people you expect to bring the tales of glamour, excitement and world travel? Flight attendants, touring DJs, or event planners might top the list for you guys, but the best stories going around the table come from our friend the accountant. Are you surprised? Let me break down why she’s lowkey got the best job in the group.
So, to give you guys the backstory, I met her at a uni party years ago, and she was talking to me about how she needed to pack for her exchange to Stockholm in a couple of weeks. I mean, first of all, Stockholm’s pretty expensive for a student, but I asked her about it and she said that the whole thing had been paid for through a scholarship provided by a top accounting firm!
So, what is an accounting firm doing spending money on student exchange scholarships? Turns out that accountants are actually super in-demand, which means that companies and organisations all over the world can get pretty competitive in order to attract smart, talented people. I was so jealous! I mean, who wouldn’t want to spend a semester experiencing that beautiful city?
So, she got back and right after she completed her degree, she landed a great gig at one of the Big 4 firms. These guys are like the top dogs in the business world, and they get hired by some of the biggest companies in the world to give them strategic advice. She was telling me that for a fresh grad, getting experience at a Big 4 firm is a great way to hone your skills and get valuable experience in the business world, because you get exposure to so many kinds of businesses.
And I guess she was right, because she landed another job soon after, and that firm offered to pay for her to get her Chartered Accountancy. I didn’t really know what that meant, but she explained to me that Chartered Accountants (CAs) take it to the next level. It can take some time to achieve CA status, so getting help from her company was a huge leg up.
Anyway, the reason I caught up with her was because she’s been overseas for ages, working at another Big 4 firm in New York City. I've been stalking her insta, and it looks like the office is just between the Empire State Building and Central Park, so I’m completely seething with jealousy. If you’re someone who’s always dreamed about travelling the world as part of your career, then you need to take a look at accounting. Many accounting firms have offices across the globe, meaning that you have plenty of opportunities to transfer from one city to another. Just to give you an idea, a company like KPMG has firms in 145 countries, across Europe, Asia, the US and more.
Plus, she’s earning enough money that she’s travelling all over the US in her spare time – think Big Sur, Alaska, Baja, the list goes on (and all while living in one of the most expensive cities in the world!). I literally cannot imagine. In this economy??
I’ll tell you what though – this is no shade to her, but anyone who’s passionate about helping businesses and organisations achieve their goals could live that life as well, ‘cause there’s plenty of sweet gigs to go around.
So, if you’re starting to feel as jealous as I am, why not learn more about how you could live your best life with accounting?
