Overview

Do you have your eyes set on seeing your name in lights? Do you love music and want to be a part of making someone’s next favourite album or song? Or do you just want to take your music skills to the next level. There are loads of reasons why you should have a think about doing a music degree, but we’re going to take you through our top five:

5. You can take your skills to the next level

There’s a whole lot you can achieve learning on your own with hard work and determination - YouTube is a pretty great place for getting the basics of music performance or production down. But what you’ll miss if you just teach yourself is the benefit of an expert’s perspective. The biggest problem with self-teaching is that you don’t always see your own blind spots, because, well - they’re blind spots!

At AIM, you’re learning from real-life, working professional musicians - which means you’re getting the benefit of their experiences, their life lessons and what’s happening in the industry right now. Learning from the best can really help you take whatever you’re doing and elevate it from amateur to professional.

4. You get to explore other aspects of the music industry

Another great thing about a course such as a Bachelor of Music is that you don’t just approach your chosen focus with tunnel vision. For example, with a Bachelor of Music (Composition and Production) at AIM, you’re not just studying how to use ProTools or Ableton. Over the course you’re taking a look at areas such as the history of production and 20th Century music, as well as a look at the arts and entertainment industry as a whole.
This means that you’re getting a more well-rounded understanding of the business you want to get involved with - and might even expose you to jobs, ideas and concepts that you might not have considered before!

3. You can make friends and contacts while you study

This is a super-underrated part of studying any degree that people often miss. One of the great things about learning in a classroom setting is that you’re almost instantly introduced to loads of other people who are getting involved in the same industry as you. Over time, you get to make friends who do great work that inspires you, and hopefully you’ll do some cool stuff and inspire them as well. Not to mention, at somewhere like AIM you’ll be learning from real professionals working today, getting their advice and showing them what you’re made of.

What this all means is that apart from making some great mates, you have a great reason to get in touch with people when you’re out looking for work or people to collaborate with you on your next big project. Anyone who’s been on a job hunt knows just how great a recommendation is to get your foot in the door, and a big part of the arts and entertainment industry is supporting and looking out for each other.

2. Having a degree under your belt really opens doors for your career

This is one of the most classic reasons for someone to look at getting any kind of degree - having that qualification on your resume does give you a boost. Think of your degree as proof that you’ve got the skills and knowledge you need to be certified by a top-notch academic institution. It shows you can understand and complete assignments, work with others, and that you have a broad range of theoretical and practical skills at your disposal to do great work.

Having a place like AIM on your resume also shows that you studied at a place which really takes your learning seriously. AIM is actually the only private tertiary college in Australia that is totally dedicated to music - which means that your musical development is their top priority.

1. You get access to top-notch equipment and facilities

Another huge bonus of doing a music degree is access to equipment and facilities. Anyone who’s gotten involved in music knows that while it can be cheap to pick up as a hobby, getting professional-grade gear and software can really start to hurt your wallet.

As a student at AIM, you’ll have access to professional-grade recording and production software, performance and rehearsal spaces. Having access to this kind of gear means that the only thing holding you back is your imagination,
