Here Are 7 Unreal Aussie Road Trips
Corona, you've made your point and you've had your time. Can you rack off now so we can travel overseas, please and thanks??!!?! Sincerely, all of us.
Whilst jet setting around the globe is off the table for the time being, I guess we're pretty lucky that we're stranded in this beaut of a country, Australia. I mean, we've got quite a lot here. From beaches to bushland, rainforests to reefs, diving spots to deserts, there is a hell of a lot to explore here! And what better way to immerse yourself in our red hot country than a road trip!
Grab your mates, fill your car with petrol, make a Spotify playlist and pack the essentials (camper chairs, a deck of cards, insect repellent... your toothbrush. Ya get the point)... It's time for a road trip!!!
1. Pacific Coast, NSW & QLD
I've done this road trip at least 10 times, in the summer and winter, and trust me. It never gets old. Start in Sydney and make your way through the Central Coast, Port Stephens, Newcastle, Port Macquarie, Crescent Head, South West Rocks, Nambucca Heads, Coffs Harbour, Yamba, Ballina and Byron Bay. Make your way to Queensland, whether you stay on the Gold Coast or keep going up to the Sunshine Coast, i.e. my fave place ever is Noosa!
You'll see the best surfing beaches, charming seaside towns and pretty hinterland and national parks.
2. Tasmania’s East Coast
From historical Hobart to the exquisite Bay of Fires, this road trip follows the coast via St Helens, Swansea and Bicheno.
I mean, you've heard it before but I'll say it again, Tasmania is glorious! These places are so picturesque that they looks like they're out of a movie. Tasmania’s quiet East Coast has a tonne of National parks with wildlife spotting, empty beaches, and amazing local produce. It's the perfect R&R time and can be conquered in less than a week (or longer, if you wanna really take it all in).
3. Cairns to Cape York, QLD
This one is a blockbuster of a road trip. It's a 1000-kilometre drive beginning at Cairns, the gateway to the Barrier Reef, and ending at mainland Australia’s most northern point, Queensland’s tip, Cape York. That's roughly a 13-hour drive abundant in red dusty landscapes, deserted beaches, croc-infested rivers, ancient rock art, and lush rainforest.
4. Gibb River Road, WA
This 660km road slices through the Kimberly, from Derby, to Wyndham passing the remote wilderness of ancient lands.
Stop at Windjana Gorge National Park, an area partly made up of an ancient reef system formed around 350 million years ago. Also, take the plunge at Bell Gorge in the cool waterholes fed by the thundering waterfalls above. This road trip is so so otherworldly that you'll forget that you're in your backyard.
5. The Great Ocean Road, VIC
It's one of the country’s most famous road trips that stretches along the southern coast from Torquay to Allansford in Victoria. This road trip is a rite of passage for any Australian. It winds 243 kilometres along some of Australia’s most stunning coastline, taking in the rainforest, sunburnt cliffs, shipwrecks, and, of course, the famous Twelve Apostles – of which there are now eight.
6. The Savannah Way, QLD, NT, WA
This is the road trip to end all road trips.
This giant road trip takes you on a 3700km adventure from Tropical North Queensland to Western Australia’s Kimberly region, linking Cairns to Broome via the Northern Territory. The Savannah Way passes through five World Heritage-listed areas and 15 National Parks weaving past cattle stations, waterfalls and magnificent turquoise waters. You'll want a LOT of time for this one (say, a month, or even two) but if you've got time, it'd be INSANE!
7. Darwin to Port Augusta, NT, SA
Explore the culturally rich region between Darwin and Port Augusta in South Australia on an epic road trip that traverses the Stuart Highway from top to bottom of this vast land. Experience Kakadu National Park and see the Red Centre! Explore rock formations, gorges and canyons before passing through Alice Springs, Marla, Cooper Pedy and the many lakes of South Australia. End the drive in the former seaport town of Port Augusta located on the east coast of the Spencer Gulf. This one is a ripper of an adventure.
So what are you waiting for? Get planning on your next road trip!
