From Couch Potato To MVP: How To Get Back Into Playing Sport
Overview
Here's how to get moving again so you don't spiritually resemble a couch potato.
I was at my fitness peak in high school. I played footy, swam laps most mornings, did boxing with my old man, and was constantly at the skate park. Moving was a seamless part of daily life.
In the blink of an eye, high school was over. I was swept up in the "real world", leaving sport in my dust.
No matter your circumstance, if you're feeling like a couch potato (like I was), and are desperate to get moving again, here's how.
Start small
Don't frazzle yourself by joining a gym, doing karate lessons, signing up to yoga and dance classes, running every day with your mate... you'll burn out (and so will your knees).
Take things gradually. Start with small workouts or informal games to build up your stamina and confidence.
Find a buddy
Having someone to work out with can make it so much more enjoyable and motivating. Plus, you hold each other accountable.
Join a team
Why not meet new mates, socialise, have a laugh, get a bit of healthy competition going as well as get fit by joining a local social team. Whether it's netball, soccer, footy, hockey, or volleyball and no matter if you used to be a gun at it or you've never even tried... get amongst it!
Set goals
Set achievable goals for yourself, whether it's scoring a certain number of points or improving your speed or accuracy. Don't forget to celebrate your progress and keep pushing yourself for more "PB's" as they used to call them at Little Athletics (Personal Bests).
Incorporate strength training
If it’s been a while since you’ve played, I recommend building your strength through weightlifting or bodyweight exercises. This can help prevent injuries and improve your overall performance on the field, too.
Stay consistent
Consistency is key when it comes to improving your skills and overall fitness level. Make sure to set aside time for regular practice and workouts.
Become a coach or referee
Finally, if you’re not up to playing yourself, why not give back to your local community as a coach or ref? You’ll still get plenty of opportunities to stay active and you’ll also make some mates too!
Remember, getting back into playing sports is not just about physical health, but also mental and social well-being. It's a great way to relieve stress, boost self-confidence, and have fun. So, lace up those sneakers, grab a ball, and start your journey from couch potato to MVP today!
