It’s sometimes overwhelming leaving school with nothing but a piece of paper stating that you’ve finished thirteen years of education. In the big scheme of things you’ve got limited to no qualifications, no experience and sometimes no idea what you want to do. Yet, you are inundated with options, primarily those in which the schooling system is designed for: university degrees, TAFE and so on.

The Australian Defence Force does not always come up in conversations about your post-school future, but maybe it should. The preconceived notions surrounding ADF service men and women are often limited to what you see and hear in the media, but now it’s time to challenge what you think you know and look towards what a career in the Navy, Army or Air Force could look like for you.

How can I get involved?

There are entry-level positions across a wide variety of careers in the Australian Defence Force that don’t require you to have any experience or qualifications under your belt. You will receive excellent skills training in Australia, be paid a competitive salary while you train and earn industry-recognised qualifications.

If you have completed Year 10 and passed English and Maths, then you’re already eligible for a number of careers in the Australian Defence Force. The requirements vary for each job but there is a multitude of opportunities available to you; the world is your oyster.

In addition, if you’ve already got a trade qualification or degree, there are plenty of options available for qualified positions across the Navy, Army and Air Force as well.

What could I do?

The versatility of options in the Navy, Army or Air Force means that you can do anything from performing as a Musician in the Navy to working as a Cook or Driver in the Army. You can even try your hand at spray-painting a fighter jet as an Aircraft Spray Painter in the Air Force. Imagine working in a unique environment, where no two days are the same and you certainly won’t get bored when there are travel opportunities aplenty!

How does joining the ADF help my future?
