The world of careers was already a daunting subject. I mean, you leave high school and are chucked into the deep end, left to your own devices to figure out what you want to do with your life, swimming through a sea of options and pathways... Add a global pandemic and it can feel like a tsunami.

What does this all mean for those of us looking for a job?

We hear you all loud and clear in this wishy-washy time. So first, let's look at the facts.

Lockdown is placing pressure on the global economy and we're facing a gnarly recession. See, businesses exist to make a profit. If they can’t produce, they can’t sell things. Consequently, without profits, they are less able to employ you. With fewer jobs going around and people fearing losing their jobs, people buy less and the cycle just spirals around again.

But this isn't the time to lose hope. This just means that the way businesses run is changing out of necessity!

Therapy sessions can be done over Zoom. Virtual fitness trainers are blowing up right now! From self-isolation, entertainment sources like Netflix and Youtube skyrocketed even further! Gigs and DJ sets were done online. Opportunities are being created and are coming to fruition, and will continue to do so.

As young people, we find it easier to adapt to change than our older generations as we've literally grown up in a time of immense change! Think of how far technology has come in our lifetimes. One second we were playing with Tamagotchi's, the next, Artificial Intelligence was being made. This is a time of crazy and chaotic change, but we've got it embedded in us to work with it.

Your dream job may be moving to a more technological side or taking a 180-degree twist! Not to mention, technology is creating new jobs by the minute so you may end up chasing a job that literally doesn't exist yet.

I know, I know, it's still an overwhelming time for all of us, but now is not the time to crumble under pressure. It's the time to research your dream jobs, contact people and companies in that field and see how they're overcoming the obstacles from COVID-19. It's the time to adjust your plans slightly, maybe take an online course and learn some more skills that are more valuable these days and prepare to be flexible and adaptable.

In essence, now is not the time to lose hope. You'll be able to find a job after corona. Talent pools and applicants will be bigger than before, but now is the time to roll with the punches, adapt and conquer!
