14 May 2020

If you hadn’t heard already, here at Year13 we’re throwing a digital careers expo called the Year13 Expo. You’ll be able to take part in within the comfort of your lounge room, bedroom, or maybe that tent in your backyard you still haven’t managed to take down.

This all will be taking place during National Careers Week (18th-22nd of May) and we have a killer lineup of speakers and professionals that could be just the kick you need to figure out how you’re going to attack your post-school journey. Here's a handful of 'em that are absolutely killin' it in their industry (plus we have a bunch of others whose webinars you can suss out here).

1. Will Hodgett - Creative Director at GoPro

Being able to travel the world as a job is something that seems so unreal, you might not deem it as something that’s achievable. Cut to Will Hodgett, the Creative Director for GoPro in Europe, The Middle East and Africa who has taken his knack for film-making and overall creativity to go on and run campaigns for GoPro in Europe and Scandinavia, USA, Peru, Mexico, Kenya, South Africa, Australia, Indonesia and New Zealand.

Will is a perfect case-study of someone who followed his passion and turned it into a viable career path, juggling film-making and creative direction whilst being able to continue to surf, hike, and bike in some of the world’s most picturesque locations. Just have a gander at what he does in this sick video below, and make sure you suss out his Year13 Expo webinar all about mixing work and pleasure.

2. Laura Evener - Pro Surfer

Being a professional athlete is not an easy feat. There's a level of dedication and passion you must have in order to succeed at a certain level. However someone like Laura Evener is a perfect example that if you have the right mindset, you can reach the top. At 28, Evener is a two-time World Junior Champion, an Australian Champion and a Pro Jnr Champion. Her junior surfing career was incredibly illustrious and then went on to compete on the WSL Women’s World Tour for 7 years, consistently finishing in the Top 10. Now, she has taken on the Women's Big Wave World Tour, conquering some of the world’s craziest waves.

Here’s the trailer for her documentary titled ‘Undone’. You can catch her at the Year13 Expo chatting about turning her love of sport into a career.

3. Hugo Gruzman - One half of Flight Facilities

How many times have you belted out Crave You by Flight Facilities at a house party? Arguably one of Australia’s best ever sing-alongs, the duo behind some of Australia’s most impressive electronic music output has continued to excel around the world, performing at festivals like Coachella, Splendour in the Grass, among others. And luckily, we've got one half of the duo Hugo Gruzman. He has gone on to produce for other Australian acts, and knows alot about the industry at large.

Register for his webinar where he'll be chatting all about the music industry over here. And while you're at it, just check out his work in Flight Facilities with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Here’s their version of Claire De Lune (which is unreal):

4. Emma Pocock - Ecowarrior

As the world can feel particularly bleak right now, it might feel good to think of ways you can help better the earth at large. Emma Pocock is a conservationist who is a great example of how you can forge your own career path.

Emma is a graduate in Bachelor of Social Science, Women’s Studies at Edith Cowan University and Master of International Development at University of Canberra. She’s employed her impressive student career to help facilitate development projects in Zimbabwe, where she spent 6 months. She also doubles as a senior policy and strategy advisor for Greens member Sarah Hanson Young. With an already bonkers resume, Emma and her husband David somehow found the time to self publish a book titled ‘In Our Nature’, with all the proceeds going back into conservation.

Suss out her webinar about how to work with the world, not for it, right over here.

5. Jake Slade and Jack Want - BossHunting

Well, this kinda makes it six people killing it, but we're keepin' it five for the sake of it looking clean (sue me).

Think about the different things you may click on when you’re aimlessly scrolling your feeds, whether that be an article, a video, a website - you get the gist. Whilst it may seem like a constant that you’ll never run out of content, there are minds behind everything you click on day-to-day.

Jake Slade and Jack Want have taken the Australian Publishing world by storm with their creation of Luxity Media, which runs some great sites such as Boss Hunting, The Versatile Gent, The Good Flight and All The Young Dads. Jake and Jack are graduates of Monash and Charles Sturt University (respectively) and are pros when it comes to the world of content, working with brands like American Express, Diageo, Stan, Tommy Hilfiger and Harley Davidson.

Hope to see you at the Year13 Expo legends, you don't wanna miss it!
