How To Spice Up Your Wardrobe When It Feels Like You've Got Nothing To Wear
Overview
- Feeling bored every time you go to pick out an outfit?
- Here are some tips to help freshen up your wardrobe
Now that school has finished, it’s that time of year where you have to actually pick out an outfit every single day.
When I finished Year 12, I realised that I had been relying on my uniform so much that I didn’t really have much else to wear. Plus, my wardrobe did not match my style at all. I had a bunch of preppy hand-me-downs when all I wanted to wear was oversized surf shirts and Levis.
So if you’re in a similar boat and are keen to fill your wardrobe with clothes you feel great wearing, here are a few tips that helped me.
Find Your Style
The first step towards loving the way you look is to find the type of outfits you love. It’s easier said than done because you can’t just walk into stores and find clothes you like when you don’t know which stores to walk into.
TikTok has a heap of really good videos showing different fashion styles, and from there it should be easier to work out where to shop.

Incorporate Your Personality
There are no hard and fast rules about what you should wear based on your characteristics. But if you’ll feel more comfortable wearing clothes that compliment your personality, it can be an easy way to nail down a style you love.
If you’re a super outgoing person, you might vibe with brighter, more colourful outfits. Whereas if you’re a little bit quieter, maybe you’d rather something simple and chic.
But your personal touch doesn’t have to end there. You can also draw on your interests for inspiration. For example, if you’re really into music, support your favourite artists by buying their merch and styling it with some staple bottoms. Or if sport is more your thing, vintage jerseys are very much in right now (check out blokecore for inspo).
Don't Forget The Staples
Out-there statement pieces are a great way to incorporate your personality into your aesthetic. But you’ll need a bunch of staples to style them effectively.
Find some affordable and sustainable shirts, pants and jackets in plain colours. Then, once you’ve found some statement pieces you love, you’ll be able to wear them with confidence in a matching fit.
Get Thrifty
Updating your wardrobe can be expensive work. That’s why thrift stores are your best friend when it comes to finding affordable clothes you’ll love. The other huge pro of thrift shops is that there’s heaps of variety in one store, so you’ll get a taste for a bunch of different styles.
If you’d rather shop online than in-store, that’s so fine too. There are a bunch of online thrift stores you can search for, or there are apps like Depop and Poshmark with millions of people selling pre-loved items for cheap.
But most importantly, if you feel like your wardrobe does need a revamp, don’t stress. It can genuinely be a lot of fun, especially if you and a friend take on the task together. Just remember that you’re looking for something that makes you feel good.
