Overview

Looking for a thrilling career where you can put your drone-flying skills to the test?

Fancy flying a mini helicopter and getting paid to do it? Believe it or not, it can totally be done.

Advances in cutting edge technologies like UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) have been taken on by the resources sector to assist in completing tasks like project surveying and planning, monitoring on-site conditions, and mapping out mining sites as projects progress.

Using these amazing technologies can mean that tasks that used to take several days in tough environments can now be done more efficiently and safely.

What this all means is that there are exciting new career opportunities for people that know their way around a controller.

Sounds interesting? There are a few skills that are really useful for this kind of work. Stuff like being tech savvy, having some experience in remote or rural environments, and having a good understanding of geography and being able to read a map really helps.

You’ll also need qualifications to professionally operate UAVs, like a UAV Controllers Certificate. Other employers may also look for VET certifications such as a Cert II or higher in Autonomous Workplace Operations, and experience working in remote operation centres.

A little-known fact is that some employers actually look for people who are handy with video-game controllers. Having responsive and accurate hand-eye coordination is a great attribute to have in this line of work, so those hours you spent playing on your consoles can be put to good use!
