Dear women,

Let's face it, a lot of these commemorative 'days' only honour groups who have been historically underappreciated or opressed. I mean, look at Mother's Day. If there's anyone who has been severely underappreciated it's all those Mum's out there.

Well today is International Women's Day, so it's our time to shine. Today we're celebrating the incredible achievements women all over the world have made.

As hard as it is sometimes to be one, you should be proud to be a woman. We've achieved so much, continue to fight for so much and have lost so much. We bloody deserve it!

By 'we', I mean all women. Queer women, coloured women, trans women, disabled women, young women, mothers, women who can't have kids or just don't want to, single women, married women, women with mental illness, women in male dominated jobs, and women who are survivors of abuse. We're all incredible.

While we're so incredibly lucky to live in a world with so much choice and opportunities, we still have so much to fight for. Luckily, there's some people out there who continue to stand up for us and make our voices heard. They're out there getting on a soapbox and shouting about how we shouldn’t have to put up with this shit.

Closed doors can always be opened. Just like good grades and uni aren't the only way to pursue your passions, there's always a way to reach your goals. There's nothing we can't do as females.

The changes we need are bigger than changing the imagery on traffic lights. It's bigger than brands virtue signalling once a year. It's a nice gesture, but we need more. We deserve more.

We need a world with pay equity and reproductive choice. We need a violence-free society where we can walk alone at night without clutching our keys between our fingers. We need tax-free pads and tampons and more education on health choices. We need a world where we applaud as loud for women in sport, celebrate women in technology, increase the visibility of female creatives and live with no jealousy (except those girls who can braid their own hair - what sort of wizardry is that?!). While we're at it - we demand pockets immediately!

Today's a day where we are each other's cheer squad. While we hype each other up today - let's not forget this tomorrow, or the day after that. Let's empower women, honour women and fight for equality the other 364 days of the year.

#YTG. You are freakin' amazing.
