Why I've Changed The Way I Make New Year Resolutions
Overview
Creating new year resolutions can seem straightforward, until the beginning of the new year rolls around and you realise those resolutions you made last New Year's Eve did not make it to the end of the year. Here's why I change my new year resolutions!
The idea of pulling off a successful resolution is always tempting. This year I’m finally going to get that gym membership 🙄 or this year I’m finally going to get up early for a daily hot girl walk. But literally the first day of the year is spent in recovery after seeing friends all night.
I mean don’t get me wrong, if I had the fortitude to get the resolutions done maybe I would, but they are always so ambitious and don’t really factor in all the little things that need to change along the way.
Like a hot girl walk in the morning? Firstly, what time is early in the morning? Are we talking six, or seven, or eight. And how does that work if I work early mornings? What about the solid eight and a half hours of sleep I say I need each night to feel refreshed in the morning?
There is seriously just so much that I don’t account for when I make these impulsive resolutions at midnight.
So this year there are no impulsive new year decisions that have been made, however tempting it may be.
To formulate my resolutions I got out some colourful pens, an old cardboard box and my thinking cap on. I wanted to start off my resolutions with some easy things that I could implement into my everyday life so that I can feel that immediate accomplishment. The idea is that I’ll then be more motivated to make the long term things happen.
Some of my short term items include making my bed everyday, spending at least 30 minutes doing something outside everyday, and reading one book a week. I feel like these are not that far of a stretch from my normal day to day, but they are that little step that will help improve my week!
Then come the more long term things. Now these are part of the bigger picture. Do I want to travel, or do I want to move out of home? Do I want to finish the year off with a certain number in my bank account?
Making the bigger picture resolutions can feel a bit trickier because they are the usual ones that seem just that little bit further than you think you can reach. But for me, this year is all about planning. So even though these are technically my bigger picture resolutions, they now have some smaller milestones within. These are gonna help me week by week and month by month to keep myself up to date, and moving forward.
This is just how I’ve decided to change up my planning of my resolutions, but being only a couple of days into the new year has already given me a touch of accomplishment so far. So I’m going to remain cautiously optimistic with my new resolution structure!
Good luck with creating your own resolutions for 2023!
