Overview
  • Sport at uni is one of the best activities you can choose to do.
  • I mean, I may be a little biased as I've found a lovely group of people to play sport at uni with.
  • But the day I have sport on is the day of the week I look forward to most, here's why...

Sport towards the end of high school lost its special touch for me. It became less of a fun time running around with friends and instead a time of the week filled with dread...

The thought of waking up before 6 to play sport was suddenly too much, especially with all of the extra responsibilities and stress from study.

But the thing is, I love playing a team sport! It has always been one of my favourite hobbies. In primary school I had some sort of sporting activity almost every night of the week.

When I started high school, those millions of hobbies faded away into one sport and one training sesh a week. The rest of my attention was focused on starting at my new school.

When it came to uni, the same thing happened all over again. All the new things that surrounded me, whether exciting or scary, distracted me from the everyday things that make my day or week something to look forward to.

And it can be tempting to let it continue that way. Starting uni can be slow going, and as you get used to the lighter schedule, the first thing that's tempting to do is to add more hours at work.

But when the time comes for assessments and exams, and it all starts to become a bit much, the thing you'll miss the most is your prescheduled hours of free time.

It can be alarming to realise just how much you miss the boring, if not somewhat painful moments, of your old school routine.

I missed the camaraderie that came with playing a sport with a tight group. I missed the stress release that comes from putting all your effort into being in the right spot at the right time to make the goal.

So... I signed up to netball and I have played it every semester since!

There's no pressure as it's only social netball, but that's all I need. Now I look forward to every single game because it's a time when I don't have to stress about exams or whether I'm contributing enough in class.

If you're not currently playing something - whether it's soccer, netball, rugby or karate, I encourage you to do so!
