1. Write your resume

I mean, duh?!??!

Well, it's a good place to start.

Whether you're applying for a job online or in person, a resume is a necessity. When employers are scouring for someone to hire, they're normally having to flick through a handful of other resumes. To make yours stand out, make it clear, concise and relevant to the particular position.

Whether you don't have any work experience, you want to bulk up your resume or you just need some resume writing tips, we have an abundance of articles that'll help you sound 11/10 on paper.

2. Look online

It's super convenient that you can just scroll through some job search websites and find places hiring near you. Look up your favourite stores, restaurants and cafes and send a cheeky email with your resume attached, even if they don't appear to be hiring. It doesn't hurt to just send an email. I mean, who knows, maybe they are hiring but they haven't advertised it online yet.

3. Actually hand out your resume

Oh, wow, we're going old school now!

What I learnt from searching high and low for a casual job was a lot of employers that I want to be hired by aren't from the technological age. They might not be advertising online or using their emails and even if they are, they probably pride people who actually go out of their way to give their resume in person.

Four out of five of the casual jobs I've had were from handing my resume IRL. It also shows initiative which is a quality employers are looking for.

4. Apply everywhere

Don't just hand your resume into your favourite retail store and become mad if you never get a call. Hand it out everywhere, even the obscure places you wouldn't think of. I mean, if you're vegetarian, maybe don't apply to a butcher (duh), but you get what I'm saying.

The first time I was looking for a job, I handed my resume everywhere and assumed I'd get a position at a fast-food restaurant but before I knew it, I was a receptionist at a hairdressing salon, something I never pictured. It was an amazing first job!

5. Follow up

After you've given an establishment your resume, wait a day or two and then give them a call, following up. You can basically ask if a manager had seen your resume and if they're hiring. Whatever you choose to say, this shows confidence and a keen attitude for the job.

Who knows, they could be tossing over hiring you and someone else, but because you called, you got the job!
