How To Say 'No' To Being Deso
If you’re the oldest out of your friend group, I do apologise. This one is for you.
Look, you’ll probably be keen to deso when you’ve just got your licence, plus it’s also obligatory. No matter where you’re going - to a party, to the shops after school, to the kebab shop after exams, you’re the go-to driver. And it’s not always necessarily a bad thing. You’ll have an excuse to not drink (not like you need one anyways but, yknow, peer pressure), be the responsible mum or dad of the group or just love a flex that you got your P’s first.
But once it’s all settled down and you’ve gotten a little older, you start to realise that driving freaking sucks. It just becomes another mundane activity getting you from point A to point B. You develop road rage. Then suddenly you get a job and you’re spending two hours a day in traffic, bleh. Plus, your slightly older sibling will absolutely take advantage of you.
So once you’re a little over it, here are our tips on getting out of being the go-to taxi driver for your friends and family.
Say you’re going to drink but then don’t
Hey, you need to have a little fun every now and then… and you don’t even need to have alcohol! Bring a couple of long necks with ya and don’t drink ‘em… who’s going to remember that you didn’t drink?
Tell ‘em you’re parked in
Tandem parking truly sucks but it may just work in your favour. Maybe your ‘rents have gone out on a dinner date and left their car at home and parked you in. Aw, no! Darn it! Sorry friends, can’t drive tonight, wanna split an Uber there?
Gee them up that you’re going hard
If you’re an old-timer deso, your mates are keen to see you rise to the occasion and get loose for the one night. So, why not take a night off and enjoy yourself?
Let them know you’ve got an early start at work
Being deso means picking up your friends and dropping them off, usually in the early hours of the morning. Therefore, get out of driving by saying you can’t stay out late enough to drop everyone home. Sorry folks, love and leaving ya - get a plan B!
Put someone else up to it
Convince a mate to take the reins if they haven’t done it in a while. They’ll still enjoy the night out if they’re a fun soul - one Saturday of not drinking won’t hurt ‘em so don’t be hard on yourself.
