Overview
  • Partying is obvs a vibe every now and then. But doing it every second day is when problems arise...eek 😵‍💫
  • I was buggered all the time. My priorities were wack. I lost mates and gained fake ones. I thought I was a lord (but was more like a loser) and I had no money... Mmm, all those nights cost me a lot more than I would have ever thought.
  • Say it with me, moderation is key 👏

I remember being 13, watching Project X and thinking, now THAT is living (Barry)!

No party in high school lived up to that movie. It was as if no one wanted to take a bullet and throw a Project X-worthy party... I wonder why 🧐 If only I went to school with Corey Worthington.

When I moved cities for uni, I'd have a ✨night out✨here and there but I was pretty preoccupied with studying and working two jobs to pay rent.

A few months in, something switched. It was as if the 13-year-old inside me screamed 'PROJECT X IT'. I suddenly became addicted to the thrill of going out from start to finish. Choosing an outfit. Pres at a mate's place. Lining up for a club, pub or venue. Dancing in a mosh, spilling vodka lime and sodas everywhere. Pashing randoms. Screaming at the DJ "Put on ABBA please!". Stumbling out with a group of mates to find kick ons. Feeling like a success if I stayed up to watched the sunrise.

These nights out went from once every few weeks, to once a fortnight, to once a week... to every second or third night... Eek. 😵‍💫 Here's what I learned.

I was buggered all the time 😴

No sh*t sherlock. More often than not, I'd stumble home, watching people on their way to work. I'd sleep for an hour or two and then either miss my shift at work or head to work still hungover. I'd be a born-again kook - mucking up orders, dropping things and being impatient with customers.

What really copped a blow was uni. I was always too buggered for assessments and would regularly skip class. My grades were disgoostin. 🤮🤧

@liam_dowling which person at kick ons are you? #kickons #party #australia #america #pregame #afters ♬ Talk About - Rain Radio & DJ Craig Gorman

My priorities were outta wack

Speaking of having no time for uni, I had no time for anything. I'd hardly hang out with mates during the day. I'd never call my family. I could never be bothered to cook a proper meal so I lived on take-out or two-minute noodles. All I cared about was the next night out. 😵‍💫

My mates weren't really my mates
I pushed away the friends that wouldn't party with me every night and clung to anyone that would. But these mates and I were like vampires, only seeing each other after dark. We were only interested in having a good one. Plus, we hardly even knew anything about each other.

I'm not a lord

I prided myself on my "wild" stories.

"I once ran into a barbed-wire fence drunk and needed seven stitches".

"I snuck into an afterparty and hung out with all these celebrities".

"My friend bet that I couldn't kiss 20 people in a night. So I kissed 25".

Do you want a medal hun? 🥇Seriously, I'm not gonna be able to pop these stories on a resume and they won't make up for my crap uni marks.

It's exxy 🤑

Think of the ubers. The drinks. Those nights you lose $20 in the pokies room. The late-night feeds out...

I was spending, on average, $80 a night. Let's say I go out three times a week. That's $240. That's the equivalent of my rent each week! 😱Let's say I do that every week. That's $12,480 in a year!?!?!!? And what was it going towards? Losing my brain cells!?!?!

Partying is a vibe, we all know it, but too much of a good thing always becomes a bad thing. For a solid year, I was broke, perpetually hungover, failing uni and kinda lonely. When I said to that Project X lovin' party of me "babes, can we calm tf down?!!" and started just going out every now and then, I felt in charge of my life again! I saw my mates in the day, I got my uni marks up and I even scored an internship.
