Sometimes, I think pres and kick ons are better than the actual night out.

Kick ons, especially, is the time to hang out in a rando's backyard on a cobweb-covered plastic chair and have hilarious chats with strangers and friends. It's very wholesome.

So here is how to survive such a beautiful tradition.

1. Get food on the way to kick ons

Who knows how long kick ons will last?! I mean, you may make it ‘til sunrise! Prepare yourself by grabbing a snack pack or a pizza on the way home because chances are, the kick ons host may not have much bangin' food.

2. Water is your friend

H20: Just Add Water isn’t just a hit TV series, it’s a motto to live by, especially when you’re consuming bucket tonnes of alcohol. Let’s not make your body hate you by dehydrating it further.

3. Pace yourself

Pre drinks is the time to smash poorly ratioed mixed drinks to gee up for the night ahead. Kick ons is the antithesis of this. It’s where you bring it back a notch. Drink slow (if you’re drinking at all) – you don’t need to make this hangover any worse than it’s already going to be.

4. Leave your heavy debates behind

Everyone is running on two and a half brain cells which they're probably about to lose during kick ons. This is probably not the time to have philosophical or political debates. This is the time to share classic anecdotes from the night and all say “what a banger” every time a new song comes on.

5. Speaking of music…

This also isn’t the time to show off your niche and nuanced songs from Sweden circa 1963. I bet they’re red hot but at kick ons, people just want bangers that they know and love. Save those deep cuts for the daytime darlin'.

6. Scab a charger

Make sure your phone is all charged for your next destination, most likely home but hey, whatever floats your dingy.

7. As soon as you wanna leave, yeet outta there

The hardest thing about kick ons is leaving. FOMO can paralyse you from leaving the couch, surrounded by uncomfortable acquaintances. It’s also keeping you away from your cosy bed.

Kick ons is red hot but sometimes you've just got to call it a day (I mean, night). Don't worry, there’ll always be another kick ons sesh not far off.
