From serving up drinks in my younger Boostie days (Boost Juice) to being a Nutri-Bullet lover, I think when it comes to smoothies, I come in clutch (and a bit of a self-proclaimed connoisseur).

It’s not as simple as it sounds, ya know. You gotta have a liquid base, fruit, vege, healthy fats, ice and any type of protein to keep ya going. It has to have the right consistency - too runny and it’s ruined your day, too thick and you’ll be sucking on that straw and moving it around for quite some time. Plus, you have to make sure the ingredients taste bangin’ together! It’s honestly a lot of trial and error but once you nail one good smoothie, you’ll be hooked on finessing more.

On a hot summer's day, a cure for a hangover, on the way to the gym or just after feeling and being a bit healthier - here are my top five, tried and true smoothie recipes (with some ridiculous names) for ya!

There are no measurements because you're the critic when it comes to the consistency (plus, don't want to get yelled at when it's too runny)!

Mango bango schmango

A super easy, refreshing, fruity smoothie that’s bound to be a crowd pleaser. Get some:

  • Milk (non-dairy liquids works fine also)
  • Some frozen mangoes (for a more creamy and thicker consistency)
  • A bit of passionfruit (for that tang..or..bango)
  • Some vanilla frozen yoghurt or frozen coconut cream (vegan option)
  • Ice, ice, baby!
  • If you love bananas overpowering your smoothie, lob a fresh one in!

Berry extraordinary

This one is suuuuper convenient because you’ve probably got all of these ingredients chilling at the back of your freezer - now’s the time to make use of ‘em!

  • Coconut water or apple juice (go a ‘lil bit more on this one)
  • Frozen strawberries (they don’t break down as easy, so don’t add too many!)
  • Frozen blueberries
  • Frozen raspberries
  • Strawberry frozen yoghurt or frozen coconut cream
  • Heaps of ice!

Chuck it on a high blend to crush up all that ice and you’ll have a flavour-packed, berry drink!

Green supreme

I thought all green smoothies were a bit gross. Like, I’m not one to judge but if I’m not eating kale normally, I don’t want it in my smoothies. Here is one of my go-to’s when I want to feel a boost + missing out on my vege intake for the day!

  • Coconut water
  • Grapes (but make sure they’re frozen - side note, frozen grapes are also an amaaazing snack, highly recommend)
  • Spinach (you will not taste it, pls trust me)
  • Frozen banana (as a substitute for ice, it’ll thicken the smoothie)
  • Dates (acts as a sweetener and tastes fab)
  • Avocado (a bit of a strange one but adds a creamy consistency, plus it’s a healthy fat)

Morning on-the-go pick-me-up

If you’ve got ten minutes to get ready, don’t have time to make some brekkie and just want a drink that’s flavourful and filling, this one’s for you:

  • Milk (non-dairy base works fine too)
  • Frozen banana (an amazing thickener)
  • Frozen strawberries
Rolled oats (adds a bit of texture, will keep you fuller for longer + doesn’t taste like anything)
  • Peanut or almond butter (because we ain’t got no time for toast + tastes amazing with fruit)

Cure my hangover...please

When your body cannot function after a night out and you can’t imagine the thought of digesting food, you’ll still need to hydrate. So drink a gallon of water but also rebalance and seize the day with this smoothie:

  • Coconut water (restores electrolytes)
  • Greek yoghurt (is gentle on your stomach)
  • Frozen spinach (to detox and rid your gut of last nights nasties)
  • Honey and cinnamon (a bit homely and soothing)
  • One whole banana
  • Loads of ice (hydration)

Depending on your taste and what benefits your diet, these are some add-ins that add a bit of flavour or substance!

  • Protein powder (fills you up for longer and useful for muscle recovery, find one that you enjoy the taste of)
  • Goji berries (essential vitamins and minerals)
  • Spirulina (adds a bit of colour + high nutritional value)
  • Cacao nibs or powder (full of antioxidants + satisfies any sweet cravings)
  • Chia seeds (flavourless, full of good minerals and thickens smoothies)

There is so much versatility to a smoothie - smash it down or create a thick smoothie bowl. Either way, no matter what, smoothies won’t fail to make your day a good one, so get blending!
