20 Aug 2020

It’s safe to say that 2020 isn’t really turning out the way we planned.

I rang in the New Year having a boogie at Field Day, arm-in-arm with my friends and telling myself that 2020 was going to be ‘my year’. I made huge plans to galavant around Europe after my uni graduation and hopefully land my first full time job. We all had huge plans and high hopes for 2020, but Australia barely recovered from the bushfires before the coronavirus stopped us in our tracks.

Fast forward six months and we spend our days wearing trackies, hoarding toilet paper and learning how to make banana bread. But 2020 isn’t cancelled. There is still four months to turn 2020 around and here’s how.

Have a positive mindset

Yes, it was supposed to be your year, but moping around for the last four months of the year won’t inspire or motivate you. Instead, surround yourself with optimistic and positive people who acknowledge it’s tough but have confidence in the future.

Reinvent your original plans

It’s easy to dwell on what could have been and feel like all your plans have been ripped out from underneath you.

When it comes to turning 2020 around, it’s important to remember that it’s about the journey and not the destination. It’s time to let go of your original plans and reimagine them in a covid-world; a holiday in Europe may be a road trip from Sydney to Byron, or an 18th birthday party may be a small gathering at home with your best and closest friends.

As for festivals, the UK’s first socially distanced concert shows great promise to the live music scene and with Yours and Owls releasing tickets for their lineup in 2021, things are looking up!

Reflect

2020 is giving us a chance to start fresh and reflect on our life pre-covid. Think of it as a ‘mini new year’, with the time to set new goals that align you with your future self.

Were you happy in your job? Are you happy in your personal relationships and friendships?

Take control

Losing what seems like everything at the beginning of 2020 may have left you in a bit of a slump, but you’re not alone. A lot of people feel like they have lost control of everything.

Take a moment to be grateful for what you can control. You may not be able to control anything you previously wished you could but you can control your mindset, how much you exercise and the media you consume.

If you weren’t happy in your job pre-covid, now is the time to study something new online. It may also be the time to let go of personal relationships and friendships which you aren’t happy with.

You may not be able to tick off our original 2020 goals and dreams, but it can be the year you learn to be resilient, adaptable and make a mean banana bread.
