Agh, housemates. They might become your best mate. They might also make you wish you never moved out of home. But they’re an experience that everyone should undertake.

From screaming sleepwalkers to those who love to party (a bit too much), I for one, have lived with an array of people and boy do I have a lot of anecdotes to share. My personal favourite was the time my housemate and I locked ourselves out of our apartment (on the third floor!) and had to break in using a ladder borrowed from the local cinema.

Now, without further ado, let’s get into 10 types of housemates you’ll experience (and get the best stories from).

1. The social butterfly

Get ready to be acquainted with anyone within a 20km radius because the social butterfly knows just about everyone. They’ll be filling your schedule with parties, gigs, sport matches, surfing competitions, art exhibitions, meditation sessions and basically any sort of gathering that their eclectic friends have invited them too.

You’ll never be lonely, that’s for sure.

2. The one with no boundaries

You’ll come home to find them chilling in your room and playing The Sims on your laptop. They’ll help themselves to your food. You’ll repetitively find them wearing your clothes. *Sniff sniff*. Are they wearing your perfume?? FFS. Sharing is caring but it’d be great if they asked first.

3. The party animal

Everyone loves a party animal… at parties. When they’re coming home at 4AM and making a ruckus… that’s not a vibe.

The good news is, if you like house parties the party animal will throw one every weekend at your place!

4. The masterchef

As far as housemates go, this one is a keeper! They’ll always be in the kitchen cooking up a storm and of course, they’ll always be giving you the leftovers.

Wow, not all heroes wear capes.

5. The invisible man

They’re basically a phantom. A ghost. An enigma. Are they ever really there? Are they really your housemate?

Even when this housemate is home (which is rare), you’ll never hear any noise or see any sign that they’re home. At least that brings peace and quiet.

6. Your best mate

Living with a best mate is basically just like the scene out of Step Brothers. You’ll always be mucking around and having a ball.

Whether you knew them before you moved in together or your souls immediately connected when you met, living with a best mate is the bomb@hotmail.com.

7. The neat freak

The plus side of living with a neat freak is that your apartment will always be in immaculate condition. On the down side, they will grill you to the moon and back if you so much as leave a cup on the table or a plate unwashed.

Better that than live with:

8. The slob

They’ll happily leave the kitchen fly infested from their ever-growing pile of dirty dishes. The place will constantly look like a tornado has struck with their belongings scattered along the bathroom and the living room. Don’t even get me started on their room… Oh man, they really need to light a candle in there.

9. The overly-attached roommate

When you moved in, you were hoping that you would become mates with your housemate. What you didn’t anticipate was that they would become so clingy that you would love to file a restraining order on them…

10. The boyfriend/girlfriend/whatever-friend

They’re not actually a housemate but they might as well start paying rent since they’re always there. They’re the significant other to one of your housemates and I mean, it’s all fun and games until they start helping themselves to your food and walking around naked.
