Overview
  • No matter your interests, there’s a job for literally everyone in construction
  • Here are five unique roles in the construction industry for interests beyond just building

If you’ve clicked through to this article, it’s a safe bet that you have some interest in the construction industry. But maybe you don’t want a standard run-of-the-mill building job, not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Construction has a range of jobs bigger than Freddie Mercury's vocals, so there’s pretty much bound to be an area of the industry that appeals to literally everyone’s interests, no matter how niche. So we’ve picked out five of these that cater to all different types of personalities and interests that could end up being your career one day – you never know!

Environmental Consultant / Manager

If you’d describe your personality as the lovechild of an environmental activist and a construction worker, becoming an environmental consultant could be your calling. In the day-to-day workers in this field focus on creating and maintaining sustainable construction practices and environmentally-friendly design. They advise construction teams on using renewable materials, energy-efficient technologies, and eco-friendly practices to create structures that minimise their environmental impact and promote sustainability.

Urban Designer

Big Lego City fan back in the day? What if you had the chance to design a real urban area, taking into account things like land use, transport options, sustainability and, of course, aesthetics? You’ll work closely with architects, engineers and policymakers to bring your ideas to life while incorporating input from the community so that no stone is left unturned.

Stonemason

Speaking of stones, if you’d love a career sculpting them to create incredible architectural structures, stonemasonry might just be your calling. From building feature walls and fireplaces to entire buildings, there’s plenty of variety in this role. Or, if you’re a history buff, you might end up working to preserve or restore historical stone structures by replicating the work of those who built them all those years ago.

Digital Engineering Lead

If you're into tech and love construction, consider becoming a Digital Engineering Lead. These experts use cool tech like augmented and virtual reality to make buildings better. They plan smarter, make things greener, and speed up projects. Imagine creating 3D models of buildings before they're built! It's a job where tech meets construction, and you can be the hero. So if you're tech-savvy and want to change the building game, this could be your dream job.

Shotcreter

Ever wondered how tradies get concrete onto walls? The answer is shotcrete. Shotcreters use a hose to shoot concrete onto services like walls, tunnels, slopes, and swimming pools at high speeds. Shotcreting is an important area of construction, so you’ll be highly sought after if you’re a skilled pro at blasting those walls.

So if you’re a history buff, passionate about the environment, a tech whiz or just love projectiles, hopefully at least one of these construction jobs has piqued your interest. If so, check out our new Tools of the Trades academy to learn more about careers in construction.
