Financial independence is all that we want in life. Having no debts, not transferring from your savings account every night out, not having to worry about repayments. Is that too much to ask for? It’s a dream, really. But sometimes, the only way we can achieve this is by working outside of our day jobs.

We all know the feeling of barely making it through the week after paying for rent, groceries, public transport or petrol, our phone bill, gym membership and other random expenses.

On top of that you’re probably still saving up for a new car, laptop, looking at investing (in yourself, property, crypto etc) or maybe just want a little bit more treat yo’self spending money. So here are some of the side hustles that we’ve dabbled into and actually enjoy!

In the wise words of Beyonce: She grinds from Monday to Friday, works from Friday to Sunday 🎶

1. Work at a pub

I can't think of anything better than rocking up to a pub shift on the weekend, catching up with your colleagues, pouring beers, bants with the patrons and having a good ol’ time. You’re going to need your RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol) and RCG (Responsible Conduct of Gaming) certificates and you can knock out both of them in a day. But also, penalty rates on the weekends, late night loading and flexible hours? Yes please!

2. Become a mystery shopper

This gig is suuuuper flexible and depending on the company or agency, you’ll be able to make bank consistently. Generally, you assess retail and customer service stores and assess them. You’re essentially posing as a real customer and aside from the hourly wage, the money it costs to purchase the goods, most of the time you get to keep what you “buy” 😍

3. Sell on Depop or eBay

Now hear me out. I believe decluttering is the key to happiness. The less stuff you have, the more you value them. So why not sell your pre-loved clothes on Depop, all your laptops and old phones at the back of your cupboard on eBay and pocket in all that extra paper?

4. Freelance ghostwriting

If you love channeling into your creativity, why not pick up ghostwriting? You could be writing articles, blog posts, books or speeches. Sure, your work won’t be credited to you but that is exactly why people pay the big bucks to have you write for them. You won’t be not flexing but you’ll be silently making money moves.

5. Become a house, baby or dog sitter

With Covid easing up and families eager to go on holidays, why not have a look into this gig? You'll find platforms and popular websites that can set you up with a profile and you'll be earning dosh in no time doing the things you love: watering plants, watching Bluey and hanging out with pooches. You may be able to turn this into a regular income stream, and who knows, maybe start another side hustle?

6. Selling artwork, candles, crafts

Everyone loves supporting small businesses and if you’ve got a killer idea that you’re passionate about, what’s stopping you? Sometimes it takes money to make money and if you’ve got the time, get that business working for you instead of you working for it. Sell digital prints, designs, personalised embroidery hoops, t-shirts, resume templates, jewellery, phone cases. Bonus if you’ve got an eye for marketing but you can always search for tips online!
