It feels like our future is already made up for us by the time we reach Year 12 – keep studying hard, go to uni, get a job. This pathway no doubt works for some people, but it’s by no means the only option for us.

Everyone has different needs, right? Some of us are more practical than theoretical. Some of us want to work sooner rather than later – and learn on the job. And some of us are looking for choice, like learning about an industry first before stepping up to a degree at uni.

Problem is, nobody really talks to us about what our other options are.

Nobody tells us about vocational education and training (VET) and how their courses are more practical-based, shorter than a uni degree, and focus on getting you ready and qualified for a specific job or trade when you’re finished. And nobody really explains what TAFE is to us – or that they’re the easiest and most secure way to net yourself a VET qualification.

Our mates at Holmesglen Institute are an award-winning TAFE (which stands for Technical and Further Education) and they show exactly why your future career is safe even if you don’t want a uni degree.

What sets them apart?

At Holmesglen, students can study apprenticeships, traineeships, Certificates and Diplomas. They offer over 500 courses across six locations and eight campuses in Victoria. The classes are taught by teachers with current experience and there’s a huge emphasis on their strong industry connections. Holmesglen even offers a range of Degrees in case you want to keep studying in a field of interest as part of your career plans.

To make sure you’re getting top-notch training – both in the classroom and in practice – Holmesglen has a number of cutting edge facilities built in partnership with several industries. These include:

  • HVAC Centre of Excellence

Located at the Holmesglen Chadstone campus for Heating, Ventilation Air Conditioning and Cooling professionals.

  • South East Water Project

An industry collaboration and research project between South East Water and Holmesglen that aims to explore the testing and reviewing of a new process for reclaimed heated water.

  • WoodSolutions Timber Composite Building

This collaboration is to assist with education of the mid-rise construction methods in Australia.

  • Holmesglen Private Hospital partnership

Holmesglen offers its own Bachelor of Nursing delivered from the Moorabbin campus health precinct, which is also home to the award-winning Holmesglen Private Hospital.

  • Zest and Cilantro restaurants

Holmesglen Institute has two fully operational restaurants at two campuses – Glen Waverley (Zest) and Moorabbin (Cilantro) – that let students practice their hospitality skills in a real service setting.

Can I do anything online?

There are also remote study and online course options available at Holmesglen Institute. This gives students flexibility when it comes to their post-school education, so you can watch your lectures and study without having to commute.

Holmesglen Institute is also hosting a Virtual Open day on June 18 when you can watch a range of pre-recorded or live sessions across different course areas. You can also contact an expert in the field directly with any questions you might have, making sure you know exactly what you need to know about studying at Holmesglen.
