Fancy yourself a bit of a riddle extraordinaire? An absolute gun at solving 1000-piece puzzles? Or perhaps you’re the type of person that can’t help but think about all the little details that others might miss?

If you’ve answered in the affirmative, it’s highly likely you’re someone who loves getting down to the bottom of things. Just like the Scooby Doo gang, you’ll stop at nothing to solve the mystery.

Well, something you might not have thought about is forging that curious mind of yours into a career path. And what better way than to forge your own in the field of research.

What does a career in research look like?

Research is an area that quenches curiosity, and the possibilities of what you can focus on are endless. Depending on what you’re interested in, you have the ability to find out the answers to what your heart desires whether that’s in a lab or hitting up databases that have ancient texts.

You could be researching science, medicine, animals, organisms, brains or even sociology (so you can figure out human interactions rather than having to rely on their star signs to explain their behaviour).

Essentially, a career in research looks like how you want it to look like. If you want to get to the bottom of something, you carve your own path.

What can a career in research give to me?

Gaining sweet knowledge, helping society and even travelling the globe are just a few things a career in research can give to you.

You’re creating questions to be answered, so naturally, you’re bound to discover something new and there’s a good chance that the search can take you across the world. Research is universal. You can go anywhere with it!

Exploring the field of research can also lead to positive change in society. Take Australian researcher Kiarash Khosrotehrani for example.  He’s made incredible progress on the study of skin biology, regenerative medicine and skin cancer with a solution to improve treatments of skin wounds and prevent skin cancer. Talk about making real concrete change.

So… how do I get started?

Our mates at the University of Queensland (UQ) are at the forefront of kickstarting these sorts of careers. And a fun fact for you is that they’re the only Australian organisation tasked to develop a vaccine against COVID-19! This is a testament to the fact that a career in research has the ability to change the world, with UQ leading the charge in Australia.

But more importantly is how versatile UQ is with their course offerings. If research isn’t totally your thing, that’s a-okay! With a curious mind like yours, UQ is the perfect uni to call yours because they examine life’s biggest questions. Whether you’re curious about Business, Politics, Teaching, Law, Architecture or Economics, UQ make sure to equip you with everything you need in your studies.

UQ also value your experience as a student, with opportunities to study abroad, participate in conferences, utilise sporting and cultural facilities and have access to more than 200 clubs and societies so you can live your best uni life.

If this sounds like your calling, make sure you suss out UQ and their booth at the Year13 Expo right here.
