Are you a recent Year 12 graduate who wants to develop your skills before pursuing study, or take the time to think about your career direction? Or have you been thinking about a job in the Air Force but aren’t sure it’s right for you? Maybe you just want a break from your studies or current job to travel and challenge yourself?

The Air Force Gap Year program provides young Australians who meet general entry requirements an opportunity to broaden their life experience with only a one year commitment. The program offers a 'try before you buy' experience of Air Force training and lifestyle for young men and women, without any obligation to serve beyond the program period.

Air Force Cabin Crew play a vital role in ensuring the safety, security and comfort of military personnel and civilian passengers such as Government ministers, Australian and foreign heads of state, royalty and guests of the Australian government, onboard an aircraft. 

In this varied and rewarding role, you are responsible for adhering to and applying aircraft-specific security procedures and legislations. You will also undertake a range of duties, including but not limited to, provision of in-flight food and beverage service, loading and unloading of passengers and compilation of aircraft documentation. 

You will have an opportunity to travel to a variety of domestic and international destinations as a member of transport aircraft squadrons such as 33SQN at RAAF Base Amberley, QLD and 34SQN at Defence Establishment Fairbairn, ACT. You may also be attached to other RAAF transport aircraft squadrons for special missions.

Air Force Cabin Crew is a prominent representational role. As such, you will receive practical training and learn to uphold exemplary standards of grooming, deportment, presentation and communication. Better still, you will develop skills such as flexibility, initiative, resourcefulness and effective teamwork that will benefit you for life.  

Throughout your training, you will be supported by professional and enthusiastic Air Force personnel who will provide the guidance and mentorship necessary for you to achieve your goals.  Your training will begin at No.1 Recruit Training Unit at RAAF Base Wagga, NSW where you’ll be enlisted in the Cabin Crew mustering as a trainee. Military training will be followed by Initial Employment Training (IET) at 33 SQN RAAF Base in Amberley, QLD.

Salary & Allowances

In the Air Force you'll get paid a good salary from day one regardless of your age, experience or qualifications; and your pay increases as you progress through training.

In addition to your salary you'll receive a variety of allowances, extra pay for relevant qualifications – plus 16.4% superannuation, a far higher rate than you're likely to find in the civilian world.

On completion of your initial military training and initial employment training, you could earn a salary with an annual equivalent of $72,253.

Locations

Upon successful completion of initial Cabin Crew training, you will be posted to 33SQN at RAAF Base Amberley, QLD. 

You will spend the majority of your working time in a pressurised aircraft, which can be subject to all flight and weather conditions. You are also required to travel to a variety of domestic and international destinations, and are subject to the effects of time zone, temperature and environmental changes.
