University is a whole lot of fun but it can also be a tough gig. Between studying, working, partying, looking after yourself and maintaining a social life, there’s a lot going on. Ideally, you want to go to the best uni you can find – a place with good facilities, good support and good mates.

In the interest of helping you with this search, we’ve put together this list of things that make RMIT in Melbourne a worthy choice. Whether you’re fresh back from a gap year, looking for a career change or you’ve just finished school, here are some reasons to browse over 350 courses and find out how to apply.

1. The location is ideal

RMIT is smack-bang in the middle of Melbourne CBD, which means it’s ridiculously easy to access, no matter which suburb you live in. The campus itself is not just ideally located, it’s in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD.

There are buildings within RMIT that are over a hundred years old but most of the campus is super modern and cutting-edge. There are also campuses in the northern suburbs of Brunswick and Bundoora, each with their own sense of charm.

2. The Job Shop

There’s a lot of stuff out there criticising uni, especially due to the number of uni graduates who are struggling to find work. But not every uni is the same, and many have support services to ensure that the transition from graduation into a career is smooth.

RMIT has Job Shop, which is a drop-in service centre for everything related to your career. Kind of like a Career’s Advisor, except they host job skill workshops and networking sessions, career health checks, resume tips and more.

3. Support networks

Adapting to the academic standards of university can be a real challenge, especially if you’ve taken some time out between school and uni. This is why RMIT has free support networks in place for students. There’s the Study and Learning Centre and the Learning Lab, which provide both face-to-face and online help for researching and writing during your studies.

There’s also the Equitable Learning Service (ELS) which provides support and equal opportunities if you’re a person with a disability, long-term illness, a mental health condition and/or if you’re a primary carer of an individual with a disability.

4. RMIT Activator

If you’re a budding entrepreneur with good ideas and/or a passion for business, this program can help you open anything from a pop up store to a social venture or help you commercialise your game changing tech idea.

5. There’s a crazy amount of course options

RMIT offer more than 350 different courses in a whole range of different subject areas. Whether you’re into design, education, business, gaming, environment and sustainability, or science, there’s bound to be a course that interests you. There have never been so many options.

6. Travel and study

No matter your course, you can study, work or travel overseas during your course. And if you’ve got HECS-HELP, you’ll probably be eligible for an OS HELP grant, which can seriously help fund your adventures!

7. Art, design and architecture

RMIT offers well-renowned courses across a whole range of subject areas but when it comes to art, design and architecture, it has a reputation for being world-class. In 2015, RMIT was ranked as the top uni in Australia for the discipline and 20th in the world. It’s an all-round good uni, but it’s particularly legit when it comes to art, design and architecture.

8. Flexible learning

You don’t have to put your life on hold just because you want to head to uni. There are online and part time options available, which means you can keep your job, look after family, juggle whatever else you need to and get a degree at the same time.

9. Clubs and societies

Whatever you’re into, you’ll find a club for it. Whether it’s a particular sport, activity, music genre, language, ethnic group, political party, religion, charity or ideology, you can meet and hang out with others who share the same interest.

And if the club doesn’t exist yet, the beauty is that you can start one. From cheerleading to Asian politics to brewing beer, the options are endless.

 10. Emerging industries

RMIT has a strong focus on new and emerging trends, such as gaming, interactive media, sustainability and big data. If you’re concerned about how jobs of the future may change, rest assured that RMIT has a range of options to prepare you for an ever-changing world.
