AdvertisementOnce upon a time you would enrol in a uni degree, sit in a classroom and have all the theoretical knowledge on your field but no actual experience. You would head out into the world with no practical understanding behind you, and were thrown in the deep end when you tried to get a job.

While that might have cut it for graduates years ago, today we know that the way to get ahead when you finish studying is to have some solid, real world experiences backing you.

RMIT knows this, which is why they’re so invested in making sure you get the real-world experience you need. They get you connected in all the right ways and give you all the opportunities you need to be ready for what comes after uni.

1. Study abroad

RMIT lets you build international industry experience through their global internships and leadership experiences. You could be heading to places like Indonesia, San Francisco, Europe or the USA as a part of your study program. Not only will it give you some solid experience, it can also give you credit for your degree- win-win.

2. The Job Shop

RMIT is nailing it with helping their students transition from uni into work in their chosen field through their Job Shop. It’s a drop-in service centre for everything career related including resume building workshops and networking sessions. The Job Shop basically gives you everything you need to know about getting your career going, and their networking events will help you meet the right people.

3. RMIT Activator

RMIT Activator is for those of us who are keen to start their own thing. If you’re a budding entrepreneur with some great ideas for a new business, or are just interested in being a part of a creative community, the RMIT Activator is for you. Here, RMIT will help you learn practical start up skills, connect with other start-ups and access collaborative workspaces. You’ll be able to meet industry professionals and get the advice and help you need to get a start-up off the ground.

4. Volunteering

RMIT has LEAD accredited volunteering opportunities. It’s a formalised volunteering program, so if you put the hard hours in helping people out, you’ll get recognised for it. It’s the sort of thing that employers want to see and it can make a big difference when you’re competing for a job.

5. Future Edge

RMIT knows that things like your part time job and the extracurricular activities you do outside your degree are what build skills like leadership and resilience. This is the good stuff that employers are keen to see when deciding who to hire, so Future Edge makes sure you get the credit you deserve. The program is online and you can keep track of all the different things you’re doing while you finish your degree. Your Future Edge record will be noted on your uni transcript and can help you land your dream job after you graduate.

RMIT has a proven track record and if you’re keen on a uni that will give you plenty of opportunities to build your real-world experience then sus out their courses (there’s over 350) and find out how to apply here.
