15 Jobs To Get You Cashed Up This Summer
Overview
- Fast food, hospo and retail jobs are a rite of passage - if you leave school without having any of this experience, go back and start again
- But for a summer job, it'll get you cashed up, so think about the $$$
Summer’s not far away, but your bank account is probably quite a distance away from where you’d like it to be. Fortunately, the legends at Year13 (actually, it was just me) have compiled a quick list of things you can do start raking in the ca$h money this summer.
1. Fast food
Fast food often gets a bad rap, but it has its perks. For starters, the sheer number of fast-food joints out there means there is heeeaaaaps of work available and the hours are often flexible.

From flipping burgers out the back to taking orders out the front, there’s a position for everyone.
2. Pizza delivery
I’ve always thought being a pizza delivery guy/gal would be pretty damn fun. You’d get to blast your favourite tunes the whole time you work and people are always over the moon when you arrive.
3. Cashier
If you wanna refine your small-talk abilities, then being a cashier at your local supermarket could be the one for you. Say G’day, scan their items, send them on their way and repeat!
I used to work at Coles but always wanted to work at Aldi because their cashiers get to sit down and hell are they speedy.
4. Tutoring
One of the best ways to learn is to teach! Tutoring can be a hard one to get into, but very lucrative once ya finally do.
You could go through a company or rely on word of mouth and do it yourself (then you get to charge your own rates).
5. Labouring
Labouring can be exhausting, but you’re essentially being paid to stay fit and spend your day in the sun.

Sounds ideal to me... unless it’s a 40-degree day – then there’s nothing worse.
6. Babysitting
Depending on the family you’re looking after, you could find yourself getting paid $50/hour just to sit around and study/watch Netflix while the children sleep. Not bad at all.
7. Hospo
From waiting tables, to mixing drinks, to preparing meals, there’s plenty to be done in hospitality. You’ll go through periods where there’s nothing to do, and ten minutes later a group of 20 customers will wander in and you’re under the pump - it actually can be pretty exciting.
Hospitality is something you can easily do overseas, so it’s a handy skill to pick up while you’re young.
8. Retail
Retail’s great for a bunch of things, like discounts on your favourite brands, big commissions (sometimes), invading people’s personal space and having a yarn with customers.

9. Paper run
The pay may not always be great, but a little bitta exercise and fresh air never hurt anyone. Plus, you’ll get to know your local neighbourhood a lot better, and probably pat a lot of friendly dogs along the way (and maybe run away from a few grumpy ones too, crap).
10. Admin/clerical work
Every office has admin work which all the regular employees avoid like the plague.
This work can be very, very boring; but it’s often easy. If you don’t wanna burn your brain out before school even starts back up again, then an admin gig could be the job for you.
11. Freelancing
If you’ve got a special skill you reckon you go alright at, then you could consider freelancing. Whether it’s writing, graphic design, or even being a voiceover actor, you could be making money with your talents!
12. Swimming teacher
Another fun job, swimming teachers get to promote a healthy and fun hobby to everyone from children to adults. The pay can be pretty good and it’s not too hard to get qualified if you’re a half-decent swimmer.
13. Dog walking
Yep, that’s right. You can actually get paid to walk other people’s dogs. You could go through a company, or just hit up your mum’s friends who are about to go overseas and see what you can work out.
14. Sell ya clothes
I’ve got friends who made crazy amounts of money selling their clothes. Chuck em up on Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace, or even set up a stall at the local markets with a couple of mates. Ya never know who might want the clothes you once loved!
15. Unpaid things that’ll get ya more cashed up in the future
I know I know, I’m supposed to be telling ya how to get cashed up this summer, but hear me out.
If you do some work for no money at all, like volunteering or even an internship, you could find yourself balling out in a couple of years. Employers look very favourably upon candidates with actual, real-life work experience, so getting it out of the way early will put you miles ahead of everyone else.
Just like number five states, labouring can be exhausting but as long as you know the ins-and-outs of the industry, you'll be sweet. Early starts and early finishes? 3pm knock offs and going straight to the pub? Suss out Construction Skills Queensland's Academy module to get started in the industry - plus, if you wanna win $5k cash, get started with one of their modules today!
