If you’ve been out there looking up ‘best student cities in the world’, you may have seen the news that Melb has been ranked in the top three - but what exactly makes it so special? Here’s some of our top reasons why studying in Melbourne is the way to go:

1. It’s supes affordable to live that inner-city life

Let’s be honest here - rent prices in Australian cities are on the whole, absolutely cooked. Ever since the ‘rona, even more affordable places outside our capital cities like Newcastle and Wollongong are feeling the pinch. What you may not know is that Melbourne has some seriously good prices smack bang in the city rn. A recent study showed that on average, a three-bedroom apartment in Melbourne’s inner city was around $350 a week less than one in Sydney city. Imagine being able to step right out of your place and actually being able to afford all the stuff that makes the city good!

2. It’s the city that never sleeps

If you’re a bit of a night owl, then Melbourne is an easy pick. I’ll spare you the most infamous examples (cough) Revs (cough), but Melbourne is famous for its nightlife. Say goodbye to getting the lights turned on at 12am on a Friday night - in Melbourne, you get to decide when you want to go home. Not to mention that their famous trams actually run 24h a day on weekends? I’m honestly getting jealous thinking about it rn.

3. It has the best university in Australia

Where else would I be talking about other than the University of Melbourne? Independent world rankings place Uni of Melb as #1 in Australia, and up to #31 internationally. It’s got an absolutely nutty research output, second only to the CSIRO and is ranked in the top 20 internationally in 14 subject areas.

There’s also loads of freedom in their graduate programs, allowing you to truly customise your educational journey. Why not study med and build out your music performance skills at the same time?

4. It’s easy to get around on the cheap

Melbourne is one of Australia’s most walkable cities, and its public transport system is out of this world compared to the rest of Aus. Where else can you find a free tram zone smack dab in the middle of the CBD? Picture this - you rent a considerably cheaper apartment in the city (based on our excellent advice above), casually stroll to the shops for some gourmet goods and a top-notch coffee, then feel a bit lazy and grab the tram home for -FREE-. Say goodbye to car regos, night riders and traffic.

5. Great career opportunities

Melbourne is a serious hub for commercial activity, with loads of international corps having headquarters and flagships there for those sweet sweet placements. Not to mention that if you’re more of a creative type, Melb has a vibrant arts and culture scene. They’re so committed to making Melbourne the destination for great vibes that they’re willing to pour millions of $$$ into funding arts programs and placements.

Now that you’re committed to getting yourself down to the student utopia that is Melbourne ASAP, make sure you take a look at studying at University of Melbourne! From their first-class teaching to their flexible learning policies, they’re the #1 spot to bring your student experience to the next level. You can get started on applying here.
