What’s the Air Force all about?
It’s safe to say that most trade jobs have their fair share of same-old same-old. Not here. There are various qualified jobs and traineeships available in the Air Force, most of which are probably not what you’d expect. And rest assured, as an Air Force tradie there is never a dull moment.
Will it suit me?
As with most good jobs, you need to be able to strike the proper work/life balance. The standard working week for a tradie in the Air Force is 40 hours after which you’re free to spend your after-hours and weekends doing as you please. There are plenty of clubs and sporting teams you can join, plus you’ll get the opportunity to travel within Australia and possibly overseas.
What will I learn?
We’re looking for people of all ages and levels of work experience. If you’re qualified, your civilian skills may transfer directly into the Air Force with minimum on-the-job training. If you’re unqualified, there are many traineeship positions available where the Air Force will provide all the training you’ll need.
How long will it last?
When joining the Air Force you will be required to serve an Initial Minimum Period of Service (IMPS). This is to ensure the Air Force get an acceptable return for investing in your training. Essentially it is a period of time Air Force members are required to serve until they can voluntarily resign. The length of IMPS varies between jobs but generally speaking will be between four to six years.
What careers will there be for me
The Air Force offers one of the most defined structures for career progression through their ranking system. Obviously your job opportunities will be determined by which apprenticeship you choose.
If you decide to leave the Air Force after your period of service, many employers rate ex-Defence staff highly due to their high training and discipline.
What will I earn?
Your initial Salary while undertaking Military (Recruit) Training will be $33,619 per year. Your pay will increase as you gain more experience and as you move up the ranks. Your total pay amount will be made up of a Base Salary plus several allowances that the Air Force offers its members.
