What’s it all about?
Whether you’re looking to work as a builder or if you’re interested in moving into construction management roles, such as a site manager or property developer, then a career in construction is for you. Construction is one of Australia’s fastest growing industries and is the third largest sector for employability nationally.
Will it suit me?
If you’re passionate about the built environment or have an interest in architecture or maths, then construction may be the career for you. Do you work well with others and are well organised? Then why not gain the skills and knowledge you need to enter into construction management through further education or training.
What will I learn?
Depending on which degree you choose, you will learn about all core elements of construction, such as applying building codes and standards, applying structural principals to various sized constructions, and fundamental management skills.
Certificate IV – This will give you the fundamental skills to enter the industry as a builder or manager of small to medium building businesses.
Diploma – A diploma will provide you with more in-depth knowledge about the construction industry, along with equipping you with some key managerial skills.
Bachelor Degree – A degree will provide you with a strong foundation in engineering principles to tackle problems in the workforce. You will gain specialised skills in built environment, analysis and engineering design.
How long will the course last?
Certificate IV: 1 year full-time or part-time equivalent
Diploma: 1 year full-time or part-time equivalent
Bachelor Degree: 4 years full-time or part-time equivalent
What will I earn?
The median weekly earnings for construction managers is A$1,538 (Job Outlook).
What careers will there be for me?
Career opportunities after graduating include builder, property developer, site manager, architectural drafter, project manager and structural engineer.
What is Fee-Help or HECS?
Did you know the FEE-HELP / HECS scheme allows you to study now and pay for a course later? The great thing about FEE-HELP / HECS is that you don’t have to make any re-payments until you have a job and your income reaches a certain level, which for the 2014 / 15 income year is $53,345.
