What will I learn?
From most training providers you will be able to acquire the basic qualifications needed to be allowed on site (e.g. Obtaining your white card) as well as choose from specialties that can help you land a job in a specialised sector. You will learn skills to set you up to work in the mining industry! So make sure your course exposes you to a broad range of both technical and safety skills such as:
- Construction industry basics
- Occupational health and safety
- Risk Management
- Surface and underground mining
Some mining schools base their training around real life scenarios, giving you all the tools necessary to enter a company in competence!
How long will the course last?
Most of the courses cover individual topics that last between 1 – 10 days.
What will I earn?
Mining is a huge industry that often goes in hand with a big pay cheque. As a rough guide here are some of the minimum wages you can expect in the mining industry:
- Environment / Health and Safety: $62,400
- Mining – Engineering: $59,280
- Management: $75,000
- Operations: $45,000
- Exploration: $110,000

What is Fee-Help or HECS?
Did you know the FEE-HELP / HECS scheme allows you to study now and pay for a course later? The great thing about FEE-HELP / HECS is that you don’t have to make any re-payments until you have a job and your income reaches a certain level, which for the 2014 / 15 income year is $53,345.
