Health Services
What’s it all about?
Put simply, studying health services is all about helping people. There are numerous specialities and majors that you can choose depending on your degree, but they all centre around the intrinsic desire to help others. A health service degree could see you becoming a nurse, midwife, carer, researcher or even helping to make government healthcare policy.
Will it suit me ?
If you enjoy helping people and don’t mind constantly working with others then a health services degree could be right up your alley. There are numerous undergraduate degrees based around different health services, but they all have these things in common.
What will I learn?
It depends on which degree you choose, but you could learn how to prevent disease, how to improve social health, how to help deliver a baby or how to work in a hospital as a nurse.
How long will the course last?
Most health services degrees are three years in length, however there is the option for further study. There are also shorter degrees such as paramedicine courses which are more focused around practical work. But generally: Certificate IV – Full Time: 1 year Diploma – Full Time: 1 Year Bachelor Degree – Full Time: 3 Years
What will I earn?
The average salary earned by those working in the health industry is $40,000 per year
What careers are there for me?
The thing with Health Services is that we all need them, we actually probably take for granted how good our health system is and the trusty workforce behind it. Potential careers include being a:
- nurse
- midwife
- aged carer
- mental health carer
- clinical specialist
- a speech pathologist
- a paramedic or a researcher.
Of course there are so many niche disciplines that you could follow with this pathway. Come get in touch so we can help you work out what might be the best option
What is Fee-Help or HECS?
Did you know the FEE-HELP / HECS scheme allows you to study now and pay for a course later? The great thing about FEE-HELP / HECS is that you don’t have to make any re-payments until you have a job and your income reaches a certain level, which for the 2014 / 15 income year is $53,345.
