Health & Fitness
What’s it all about?
A career in health and fitness is a lifestyle more than it is a ‘job’. It is an industry like no other where you get to help people feel and look good, achieve their health and fitness goals, and ultimately change lives, through designing, leading, or instructing exercise programs or classes.
Will it suit me?
Getting into the health and fitness industry is suited to if you like the idea of keeping happy, healthy and active, being sociable and doing something different to the normal 9-5 desk job. You may have loved health and physical education at school, or made a huge lifestyle change and want to lead by example and help others lead a happy, healthy, fit life too.
What will I learn?
You will learn how to provide efficient quality health services to improve the health and wellbeing of your clients. You will also learn about the effect that sport and fitness can have on participants and gain a science-based knowledge and understanding of sports and fitness performance.
How long will the course last?
Studying for a Certificate III and IV in Fitness will take between 12 and 52 weeks, depending on whether you choose to study full-time, part-time, or online.
Further qualifications will take longer, but you then have the opportunity to be working as a Personal Trainer or Group Fitness Instructor while you continue your studies.
To get the Master Trainer advantage, you can then go on to become a
Massage Therapist (Certificate IV in Massage Therapy Practice)
Fitness Business Manager (Diploma of Management)
Exercise Therapist (Diploma of Fitness).
What will I earn?
The average salary for those working in the health and fitness industry is $45, 000
What careers will there be for me?
With more than 60% of Australians overweight or obese, more Personal Trainers are needed to assist them in their journeys to a better lifestyle. In the past year the industry has seen a huge spike in small group training, outdoor training boot camps, and 24/7 gyms, and there’s no sign of the need for health and fitness professionals slowing down.
You could become a Personal Trainer working outdoors in the park or on a beach, on a cruise ship, in a gym or health club, or a Group Fitness Instructor, Gym Instructor, Massage Therapist, Exercise Therapist, or Fitness Business Owner.
What is Fee-Help or HECS?
Did you know the FEE-HELP / HECS scheme allows you to study now and pay for a course later? The great thing about FEE-HELP / HECS is that you don’t have to make any re-payments until you have a job and your income reaches a certain level, which for the 2014 / 15 income year is $53,345.
