Overview
  • Finding the balance between life and work and study is really tricky. No matter where you draw the line it is always bound to change, and change often.
  • Life can quite easily get in the way of work and study, and sometimes, like when you get burnt out, study and work can get in the way of life.
  • Here’s how to tell what burnout looks like!

1. Exhaustion

Getting to sleep can be tricky to navigate these days because of the constant whirring of technology around us, all day every day. So finding the off switch to end the day is not a simple task.

Even harder, when you’re in the midst of burnout this can become even worse. The exhaustion ebbs into you and going to sleep is difficult and getting up in the morning is even harder.

Being exhausted this time around isn’t something that can magically disappear the next time you get that long hoped for 8 hours of sleep. Instead it lingers with you. It leads to constantly being distracted at work and honestly just feeling off.

2. No time for social activities

We all have ups and downs with wanting to be social or not. But sometimes there are periods where work or uni or school become so much that even the concept of leaving your room is an effort.

So when it gets to being social and seeing your family or friends, it can be literally the last thing you want to do.

Plans made well in advance can become exhausting before they have even begun because suddenly the tasks that are required to get yourself ready have become much bigger and harder tasks than they were before.

3. Sweating the small stuff

There is definitely a difference between being just a bit busy and absolutely drowning in all the tasks and activities that are on the agenda. Sometimes you can actually be okay with your workload, even though there’s a ton to be done.

But then that one thing gets added. That extra lunch meeting you weren’t planning on. Or that extra 1 hour task you said you would do months ago, but has now arrived and does not fit into the calendar smoothly.

All of a sudden everything becomes a bit too much. Finishing off everything that was on track last week is now all over the place. Because your carefully planned schedule is now off everything feels like it's falling to shambles and there is no way to stop it.

Trying to cope with burnout is difficult but absolutely possible.

The first step is talking to someone. Whether it’s your boss, asking to lower your workload for a month or two so you can lower your stress level, or just a family member or friend who can support you.
