How To Nail Your Summer Road Trip
What can beat cruising through sunflower fields and beach suburbs, open windows letting the fresh air in and a funky tune blasting? What can beat stumbling across majestical waterfalls and laying on the beach all day? What can beat camping under the stars and cooking homemade burgers?
Nothing, that's what.
Here is how to reach maximum potential for your summer road trip.
Clean and check your car
We'll start with the boring part first. Cleaning and paperwork give me a rash but alas, it must be done. If you're living out of your car, you probably want it to be clean and check that everything is in working order so you don't get stranded in the ass-end of space.
Have a loose plan
The plan doesn't have to be set in stone as spontaneity is the key to a good road trip. But figuring out some rough, flexible plans is a good way to keep on track.
How long are you going for? How far do you want to go? How long do you want to stay in each place for? What accommodation are you going for?
Pack the essentials
I hate to sound like a mum but here are some essentials that everyone should bring.
- Sunscreen, aftersun lotion (I'm a real sucker for aloe vera gel), a hat and sunnies. Look after your skin, kids! Oh and insect repellant!
- Bandaids, panadol
- Reusable shopping bag, reusable cups - anything reusable to be honest. Save the world.
- Toothbrush! Don't forget your dang toothbrush. Soap, shampoo and conditioner, towels.
The car ride
Car trips are always where the best deep and meaningful convos happen. They're also where the most smack is talked.
When the convo dwindles, have some bangin' playlists at hand. I'm talking classic hits to get everyone belting out the lyrics.
Perhaps even have some podcasts ready. If all else fails, a game of I-Spy never hurts...
Also, have snacks and water at hand. Duh.
Rough it
Everyone travels differently, but one of my favourite parts of road trips is roughing it. Staying at campsites, making homemade burgers rather than eating out every meal, not giving a rats ass what you look like.
Salty hair from the beach, brushing your teeth in the street with a drink bottle, wearing thongs everywhere. It's liberating!
What to do?
Research the best beaches, waterfalls, art galleries and clubs in your next city. Ask the locals as well!
Adventure out, wander around and meet new people. Also don't feel bad to have chill days spent lazing on the beach and reading a good book.
Watch some sunrises and sunsets, eat some good food, keep a journal...
I'm going up the east coast this summer and will be volunteering to help the koalas!! Why not do something selfless too?
Sorry, gotta go, I have to start compiling some good songs for my next road trip. Have fun!
