No Two People Have The Same Journey At the Defence Force Academy
Officer Cadet Phoebe Sutherland
20-year-old Phoebe Sutherland is currently studying at the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) in Canberra where she is training to become a General Service Officer in the Australian Army and completing a Bachelor of Business.
ADFA is a unique partnership between the Australian Defence Force and the University of New South Wales. The institution combines military education and training with academic study, enabling military students to attain an undergraduate degree from one of the world’s leading universities.
“The best part of ADFA is that no two people have the same journey. You can pick and choose the degree you want to undertake, as well as which sports and extra-curricular activities you want to be part of,” Phoebe said.
During high school, Phoebe’s family emigrated from the UK to Australia when her father, British Army Major Allan Sutherland, took up a position with the Australian Army.
“I knew from speaking with friends who studied at ADFA that it offered much more than a normal university. I joined for the prospect of overseas trips, bettering my leadership skills, and also for the mental and physical preparation for a career in the Army,” Phoebe said.
When she finishes her studies at ADFA, Phoebe will attend the Royal Military College (RMC) Duntroon to undertake further training to become an Army Officer.
“At the conclusion of my third year at ADFA I will be posted to RMC, where I will spend 12 months learning and developing my understanding of Platoon level missions. During this time at RMC, I will cover four types of operations: Offensive, Defensive, Complex and Stability Operations,” Phoebe said.
Phoebe also participates in voluntary extra-curricular activities; specifically Community Service, the Vikings Football Club, and the Ladyhawks Basketball Club.
“My involvement in extra-curricular activities and my ADFA leadership position as the Communications Coordinator give me a fantastic opportunity to meet people across all three services and squadrons in all three year levels,” Phoebe said.
Phoebe is a firm believer in making the most of every experience at ADFA and is looking forward to a fulfilling career in the Army.
“I am excited to march out of the Parade Ground for the very last time. After witnessing two Graduation Parades, I can’t help but feel pride and excitement for when it’s my turn to throw my hat up in the air,” Phoebe said.
The Defence Force is currently recruiting in a number of roles. For further information on military training and study at ADFA visit: defencejobs.gov.au/adfa or call 13 19 01.
