It’s no secret that there are plenty of different careers available in the beauty industry, with the ever-growing number of things people want to improve or change about their bodies. From hairstyling and eyebrow threading, to lip fillers and mani-pedis, to spa treatments and laser; there are more products, technologies and people needed than ever before in beauty.

While it might seem to some like a superficial industry that succeeds by perpetuating insecurities, there’s actually plenty of space in the beauty industry to majorly improve peoples lives. It’s not just about making people look good – it’s often about making people feel comfortable in their own skin, particularly if they’ve spent their whole lives feeling the complete opposite.

There’s a lot of procedures that can really help improve the quality of people’s lives, and many of them fall under the umbrella of ‘health aesthetics’. Health aesthetics is a branch of the beauty industry that is all about altering appearances by treating different ailments or conditions, to help people feel more confident about themselves. There’s a bunch of different jobs you could get in health aesthetics, and most of them fall under the following three categories:

Helping people with skin conditions, (otherwise known as skin health management)

Who of us hasn’t had an issue with our skin at some stage? Whether it’s to fight a breakout (or fifty) or a bit of skin discolouration, there are a number of ways dermal therapists and aesthetic clinicians can help. Basically, if you’ve done some relatively permanent damage, these are the guys you want to call, who can scrape, burn, freeze or otherwise heal your poor skin and have you looking like you again.

Plenty of people live with the scars of acne (both literally and emotionally) and other skin related conditions. Imagine being able to help someone undo all those years of pain and embarrassment with just a few short procedures?

Helping people before and after surgery

Cosmetic or plastic surgery isn’t always for the vain and self-obsessed. Plastic surgery can drastically alter people’s lives and wellbeing, and it’s the job of skin therapists in health aesthetics to support patients before and after surgery.

Imagine helping out burns victims by performing plastic surgery to restore their body and return them to the life they once led. Or assisting patients in their recovery from rhinoplasty, aka nose jobs for those who have blocked nasal passages so they can breathe properly for the first time in their lives.

Improving people’s overall wellbeing

How many times have thought to yourself that you could kill for a spa treatment? In the world we live in today, people are battling stress on a daily basis, and it’s the job of beauty and spa therapists to help nurse us back to good health (and sanity).

But a beauty therapist’s work has more functions than simple pampering. Spa treatments are incredibly important to the wellness of some patients. There are various relaxation treatments that can fight against problematic stress levels and ensure people are getting enough sleep and there are facial treatments that can seriously improve the appearance of damaged skin. Never underestimate the power of a good spa therapist – they can work some real magic.
