Things You Can Do When You're Bored Out Of Your Brains
Boredom. An unpleasant, transient, affective state in which the individual feels a pervasive lack of interest and difficulty concentrating on the current activity.
How whack is it that we live our lives full throttle, rushing from work to uni to gathos, always wishing for more time.
Now, we've been given the gift of time thanks to an absolute sh*tshow of a thing. But too much time on our hands can be frazzling and overwhelming. It's sometimes unmotivating and uninspiring, leaving us bored out of our bloody brains.
So here are some things to do instead of staring at your ceiling for hours. Even if they don't seem to tickle your fancy at first, you'll never know if you don't try!
1. Learn a language
This seems like a mighty task but with Duolingo, it's actually fun. With games and quizzes to keep you motivated, you'll become a linguistic whizz in no time, whilst also feeling like you've accomplishing something!
2. Watch a new movie
You're bored, right? You probably want something fresh and spicy to watch, yeah? Well, it's time to do some researching and find a new movie that you've never seen before!
Here are some random recommendations that may help:
- Almost Famous
- Ferris Bueller's Day Off
- Whiplash
- Pink Floyd - The Wall
- The Kings Of Summer
- Dazed And Confused
- Mid90's
- Brigsby Bear
- Across The Universe
- Into The Wild
- Captain Fantastic
- The Nice Guys
Now you can't say I didn't try to help you! You're welcome!
3. Find new music
I love falling down a rabbit hole of new tunes and bands. Spotify, for example, has a 'Discover Weekly' playlist and a 'Release Radar' to keep me finding fresh bangers.
I love looking up bands similar to the bands I love and expanding my music taste!
Right now, I've been looooving New Wave music. That includes:
- The Talking Heads
- DEVO
- The Cure
- Blondie
- Joy Division
What a vibe!
4. Watch Ted Talks
Ted talks are my jam. Right now, I miss being a social butterfly and meeting new people. But through Ted talks, I'm listening to peoples stories, values and beliefs. It's a one-sided interaction but the golden nuggets of wisdom that I gain from each person are priceless.
Oh and I've been whipped on Ted-Ed videos, especially the Myths From Around The World series!
5. Write a movie
I mean, yolo?!? Everyone has a story to tell, so why not tell it. Go on Celtx and start typing! Who knows, you might figure out that you have a knack for writing. If you end up at the Oscars, you better thank me in your speech.
6. Make a vision board
Get creative and create a vision board of goals and dreams to achieve whilst in iso and after iso! Guaranteed way to keep attracting good vibes my dudes.
7. Read a book
Reading is the best thing you can do. I truly mean it. And don't give me excuses that this will just make you even more bored!
You just haven't find the right book! Whip open an old fave or a fresh spine and get swept away to another world.
8. Have some R&R time with your pets
If you're lucky enough to have a pet, why not spend some deep and meaningful time with them? My dogs, for example, are too good for this earth and they never cease to entertain me. I also taught my rabbit yesterday to run in circles around me when I spin.
See ya, I need to take us to Australia's Got Talent.
9. Paint
Channel your inner Bob Ross and get painting! Even if you're like me and have absolutely no talent when it comes to art, who cares! Paint anyways! It's a vibe and it's therapeutic.
10. Do some exercise
Get those endorphins pumping and feel accomplished by moving your bod. YouTube has a tonne of workout videos that you can do from home. My faves include vids by Fitness Blender and Popsugar Fitness. After a workout, you might feel a little more inspired and productive and a little less bored!
11. Make a playlist
I get a thrill from creating new playlists. It's honestly an art form. I thrive from choosing a funky photo, name, description and of course, the bangers inside. My meticulously (and most recently) crafted playlists are titled:
- My ascendant sign warned me of this
- About to chuck a wobbly
- Cheater cheater compulsive eater
My mind is cooked.
12. Online shop
This is dangerous but suss out your fave stores online. Buy an outfit that you'll wear when iso is over so you look fresh and unreal when you reunite with your mates!
13. Learn an instrument
If you've got an instrument lying around the house, it's time to become the next Jimi Hendrix or Mozart. There are dozens of online resources and YouTube videos to instruct you on where to start!
14. Play an old game
Reunite with an old flame, whether that's The Sims 3, Animal Crossing or a real deep cut from the past, The Simpsons Hit And Run for PS2.
15. Re-arrange your room
Print off pictures and decorate your walls. Move your bed. Re-arrange your bookshelf. Declutter your clothes. Wipe the dust off your window sill.
Let's get that bedroom of yours spic and span since you're going to be spending a lot more time in it! Who doesn't love a spicy change?
16. Get in the kitchen and get creating
Chuck on an apron and get creative in the kitchen by trying out some new dishes for yourself and the fam.
I made a cheesecake from scratch yesterday and have never felt so talented in my life.
17. Listen to a podcast
Podcasts are there to educate, enlighten and/or entertain you. Whether you're into crime podcasts or just like hearing people yarn about everything and nothing, there is a podcast for everyone!
So there you have it. Just a few things you can do to fight boredom!
