Why You Should Consider a Job On Campus
Juggling uni, study and a social life with a part time job can be tough, especially when you’re wasting time commuting between all of them every day. So if you’re heading back to uni after midsem with little-to-no cash in your pocket, we feel ya – it might be time to look into a job on campus.
One of the best parts about an on campus job is simply the convenience. Work where you study, kill two birds with one stone. And doesn’t it make the hour-and-a-half commute a little more worth it when you know you’re not just going in for an hour-long tutorial? Plus, you’re getting paid.
Harry, a tutor on campus at UNSW, says the pay rates for on campus jobs are great, so he doesn’t have to work as many hours to support himself as much as he would otherwise.
Another great aspect of working on campus is that your employers understand the needs of a uni student, so hours are flexible and you can work them around your class and study schedule. Jobs like tutoring, research assistance, and promoters (brand ambassadors), as well as a bunch more are adaptable to your needs. Who says you can’t have a social life when you’re studying?
With an on campus job, you’ll be networking and making friends with people you otherwise may have never met. Whether you’re sharing your knowledge and skills with them via tutoring, or meeting people on the street with your promotions, everyone you meet is a connection, and a potential new friend. You also might become closer with faculty and staff, which is always good for a potential career boost.
Harry says: “I enjoy my job because it gives me the opportunity to teach other students in an area that I am passionate about. I think that leveraging students to help other students creates a fantastic on-campus culture and is probably overlooked as one of the great things about on-campus jobs for young people.”
It’s also been said that working on-campus makes students more likely to persist in their studies, so if it’s motivation you’re looking for, an on-campus job could be for you. Did we mention you get paid?
