Overview
  • It's totally normal to feel like you've failed when you drop out of uni or TAFE. After all, society places a lot of importance on getting a degree. But that doesn't mean that you're a failure just because you didn't finish your course. In fact, there are heaps of successful people who have dropped out.

Here are four reasons why you're not a failure for dropping out.

1. You're not the only one

First and foremost, it's important to remember that you're not the only one who has ever dropped out of school. In fact, some of the most successful people in the world have dropped out, including Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Mark Zuckerberg. So, if these billionaires can make it, so can you!

2. You can always go back

If you're not sure what you want to do with your life right now, that's okay! You can always go back and finish your course later on down the road. Just because you drop out now doesn't mean that you've permanently closed the door on getting a certificate/degree.

3. There are other options

Not everyone is cut out for traditional higher ed. Some people learn better through hands-on experience or by pursuing their own interests outside of the classroom. If uni or TAFE just isn't working for you, that doesn't mean that you're a failure—it just means that you might need to find another way to learn and grow.

4. You can still be successful

Just because you don't have that piece of paper doesn't mean that you can't be successful in life. There are plenty of opportunities out there for people without qualifications—you just have to know where to look for them! A couple of ideas to get you started:

  • Start your own business or side hustle
  • Upskill via a short online course
  • Find an entry-level position and work your way up from there
  • Volunteer or do some work experience to get your foot in the door

Dropping out doesn't have to be the end of your story - it can be just the beginning. So don't give up - keep pushing forward towards your goals, even if they seem impossible right now.
