Edith Cowan University, or ‘ECU’ as everyone calls us, is Western Australia’s youngest university. We’re also one of the world’s best young universities under 50 years old.
But being young hasn’t stopped us from being good at what we do – teaching students to be world ready.
For an amazing 15 years in a row, we’ve been rated 5-stars by our graduates for teaching quality. (Good Universities Guide, 2008-2022).
We’ve also been ranked Australia’s best public university for undergraduate teaching quality for 6 straight years (QILT survey 2020).
But enough of the bragging. Here’s another thing about us you may not know – we’re the only university in Australia named after a woman.
Edith Cowan (OBE) was one of Australia’s most influential and inspiring women. She influenced the course of education in Australia, paving the way for many people to access an education they could only previously dream of. She was also the first woman elected to the Australian Parliament.

Schools are split between our Joondalup and Mount Lawley campuses and some courses are also taught at our South West Campus near Bunbury. In 2025, we’re opening a super exciting new campus in the middle of Perth city. Stay tuned for that one!
Admission pathways
Taking inspiration from our namesake, ECU has been a leader in finding ways to give people from all circumstances – from school leavers to mature age students who’ve not studied for many years – an opportunity to access higher education.
This access is possible through a range of admission pathways, including university preparation courses and an experience-based entry scheme. Visit this page to read a bit more about pathways for Year 12s.
