Most of you are probably in school holidays at the moment but if you’re staring down the beginning of weeks of study then the long weekend is the perfect excuse to give yourself a bit of a break. Some of us will be stuck behind a cash register or a counter serving customers the entire weekend but if you’re not, you might as well enjoy the free pass. Ditch your notes, put your study cards away and treat these three days like a proper holiday (rather than a study break).

1. Sleep

You have a solid three days where (if you’re not working) you don’t have to get out of bed. So make the most of it. Sleep as long as you want in the morning and doze off again whenever you’re feeling sleepy. Stay in your pyjamas as much as possible and wrap yourself in doonas. Now is the time to bank some decent sleep and enjoy the feeling of being able to go to bed without setting an alarm. You’ll have plenty of time to sort out your sleeping pattern later.

2. House party

The perk of a long weekend is you have three possible nights for this with a chance for a full day recovery. There’s also the option of just going hard the whole weekend but it’s up to you whether you want to squeeze in anything else on this list. Stock up on cheap alcohol, figure out who’s parents are going away for the weekend and start drinking. No house party is complete without some drinking games and someone throwing up behind a tree so be ready for both.

3. Camping

About a million other people will have the same idea (especially now the weather is warming up) but if you can pack up all your shit, round up some mates and head off early to an open camp site you’re in for a good long weekend. Take the couple of days to get away from everything and just chill out. Especially if you need a break from studying this is the perfect way to get your head together.

4. Road trip

You’re going to want to hit the roads early for this one because everyone else is going to be wanting to do the same thing. But, even if you decide to just head to the beach for the day, going for a solid drive can make you feel like you’re spending your long weekend well. Plus, it’s a good way to get some Vitamin D if you’ve spent the past couple of days cooped up inside. Your road trip doesn’t have to be days of driving–after all you want to use your three days to their full potential–so look for hiking trails or bush walks that don’t take hours to reach. Stock up on snacks, make a playlist and get going.

5. Movies

No doubt there’s some quality TV shows and movies that you’ve been meaning to watch since forever but just never got around to. Well, now’s your chance; time to binge watch what everyone’s been talking about or catch up on all the new releases without feeling guilty about it. Get comfy, build yourself a cocoon out of your blankets and settle in for a solid binge watch. Whether you decide to run through the Harry Potter series yet again, or find a new show on Netflix, this is the perfect way to distract yourself from the endless pressure of studying.
