So the UK hey? It’s a pretty bloody popular destination for gap year travellers, and for good reason. But even the Queen knows living costs in old London town aren’t cheap. And finding a job? Well that’s a whole mission in itself.

Luckily for you, we’ve done the research ourselves and found a way for you to travel to the UK with a job and room already lined up and ready to roll. As long as you’re not opposed to a bit of beer and a good pub feed.

The UK Pub Co. is all about hooking up young people with a pub job and cheap accommodation before you even leave home. With over 750 partner employers, they already have all of the contacts you’re lacking when it comes to finding a job. Probs a bit more reliable than your mate who’ll tell you anything to get you over there.

Depending on your previous work experience and education, you can either apply for jobs as a dishy, waitress, bar tender or even as a chef.

For those of you who want to jump straight onto a UK-bound plane asap, your best bet is probably applying for the kitchen porter job as no experience is needed. Surely you’ve helped your Mum out with dishes at home before, right (maybe not but you’ll pick it up pretty quick). If you’re flying out later in the year and have managed to get some experience in customer-service, hospo or retail before you leave, have a crack at front-of-house work at the pub. You’ll be pouring pints in no time.

The chef positions are for those who have already had a fair bit of culinary training or experience. But if you’re super keen, have a go—you could be the next Jamie Oliver or Gordon Ramsey (but hopefully with a few less profanities).

When you arrive, you’ll be sharing accommodation with other like-minded travellers from Down Under, plus a coupla Kiwis and maybe even some of the politest people in the world, Canadians. Your discounted rent (!!!!) comes straight out of your pay and your room will be so close to work, you won’t have to spend extra cash or time on public transport (see: more money for beer). There’s plenty of work to be done, so don’t fret that you won’t get enough shifts. And you’re guaranteed to get two days off a week to frolic and gallivant around the UK countryside. Not to mention, you’ll probs get to eat heaps of traditional English pub food for next to nothing as well. Did someone say Yorkshire pudding?

There’s just a few lil catches. Ya gotta be at least 18 years old to apply and not have any serious criminal or traffic offences. There’s a minimum stay of four to six months, so you can’t just make bulk cash for two weeks and then take off. But why not make a year out of it, work for six months and then spend your hard earned cash travelling around Europe? If you want, the UK team can then sort another job for you, so you can keep the money rolling in.

If this sounds like the gap year you’ve spent long class hours dreaming about, then head over here to see some more info and register your interest.
