What’s the Navy all about?
The Navy has something for everyone with their diverse range of technical trade jobs. Whether you’re just getting started, with little or no experience, or you’re a qualified tradesperson looking for a change, we can offer you the opportunity to put your talents to good use in a job which is challenging, worthwhile and interesting.
Will it suit me?
As a tradesperson in the Navy, it’s all about the amazing machinery. You could be doing similar work to what you would in the civilian industry but, instead of working on cars, you’d be working on helicopters or submarines!
With three new Air Warfare Destroyers (AWDs) and two Landing Helicopter Docks (LHDs) due to arrive in the near future, the technology is only going to get better.
What will I learn?
You’ll first complete Basic Sailor Training at the RAN Recruit Training School in Victoria, which includes a training cruise. We’ll then provide you with all of the trades training you’ll need to do your specific job, as well as additional skills like first aid and boarding operations. Along the way you’ll earn highly regarded qualifications and skills for life.
How long will it last?
When joining the Navy you will be required to serve an Initial Minimum Period of Service (IMPS). This is to ensure the Navy get an acceptable return for investing in your training. Essentially it is a period of time Navy members are required to serve until they can voluntarily resign. The length of IMPS varies between jobs but generally speaking will be between four to six years.
